..the Minister announced that he intends to push ahead with discussions with the telecommunications sector with a view to establishing a roadmap for the delivery of next generation broadband in Ireland in line with the commitments in the Government’s National Recovery Programme. Under the NewEra proposals in the Programme for Government there is a commitment for NewEra to co-invest with the private sector and commercial semi-State sector to provide next generation broadband to every home and business in the State. Consideration on how best to advance these proposals, for which Minister of State Fergus O’Dowd has responsibility, is being advanced.

“In order to accelerate the development of high speed broadband, my colleague Minister O’Dowd and I intend to engage intensively with industry. To this end we will be convening the first formal meeting of the Next Generation Broadband Task Force over the coming weeks”.

The Task Force comprises the CEOs of the major commercial telecommunications companies operating in the Irish market. The discussions will focus on identifying private and State sector investment plans, removal of barriers to investment where appropriate and establishing appropriate targets and programmes with a view to ensuring that Ireland delivers high speed broadband to all areas in line with our EU targets.

I was trying to remember all the previous get togethers, mostly they were government organized, others were well meaning and at least one good document was produced.

There was the Comreg Next Generation Industry Steering Group. NISG (which met twice?)
There is the Eircom FTTX industry Leadership Group FILG (which has met 5 times)
There is the DCENR NGB Task Force (which hasn't met yet)
There is the Innovation task Force Implementation Group on Key proposal No 11 - Universal NGA Access. (which has met but cant' say anything)
There was the International Forum on NGN (which met for a day)
There was the DCENR Public Forum (which met for half a day)
There was the Forfas proposal on NGA (which met with ridicule - from DCENR. And in fairness not really a forum)
There was the TIF Broadband Task Force
There was the Broadband Crisis Advisory Board (later the Broadband Customer Group)

    Any others?

Thanks for the suggestions above but I was really looking for instances of other Next Generation Network Forums (Fora) that had been and gone, or NGN reports that were curling up on some windowsill or had fallen down the back of a radiator.

This current task force, seemingly has still not met. Its origins go back to 2008 - possibly 2007. So you have to ask why it takes three years (or is it four) to convene a meeting.
