Google or search these boards for YLOD, because that sounds like it.

    Is the fan blocked/clogged?

something similar happens to my PS3 if there is a disc stuck in it...i usually have to dislodge the disk by turning my PS3 upside down, turning it on and giving it a gentle shake....after a few attempts the disc pops out and the PS3 starts as normal.

RLOD is caused by overheating (usually the fan is either clogged or the thermal gel has degraded, if its the latter it needs to be opened), try using a hair dryer on the "cold setting" and aiming in the fan at the back for several minutes to get rid of dust and cool the PS3 down. If its the thermal gel at fault it will only be a temporary fix.
