Mods what about a self-builders survey to assess the pros and cons for people going about self building. Along the lines of:

    • What was the self-builders time lost from own work due to managing self-build
    • Whether they would now recommend an arch/QS/PM and enter a formal contract
    • How much over their expected budget was due F*^-ups because of lack of initial spec, detailed drawings and proper supervising on site.
there's loads more that could be here...

OK, why not use this thread to formulate the questions, then we can put them together and form a small question post which could be quoted and filled individually on a thread.

i think it would be a natural instinct to gloss over the bad stuff and put it to history.... as in you always hear the good self build stories, hardly ever the nightmares !!

good idea though and id be interested to see how it goes

Sydthebeat, that's the point. I agree people forget the bad stuff, and then a new self-builder comes along and you guys go through all the same stuff again. I've seen posts here particularly in the live self-buid section where experienced self-builders have stated there mistakes. This Survey is just to put these major factors (like time, cost overruns and reasons professionals are needed) together so that they can easily be referred too.

Feel free to add to the list. (I'm trying to avoid the msq costs as they inevitability cause tangents and arguments)

I've heard that an old version of the RIAB contract had a post occupancy 'type' stage, obviously nobody wanted to pay for this so it was removed, and now its just up to the architect to learn from his/her mistakes.

The fact the majority of people don't come back afterwards and tell you the how they got on is a real problem, there is a slim chance this will work for that reason, but worth a look I think.
