Having a look at the records last night. Some looking likely to fall this year while others dont look out of reach for years to come but which do people think are the strongest?

    Mens Records

    Womens Records

Simple: 8:21.64 for Sonia O'Sullivan over 3000m. Only Szabo (just barely) and the Chinese in 1993 (will keep my mouth shut and say nothing!) have ever gone faster. Maybe if it was still a championship event Defar and Dibaba would have gone faster by now but I cant imagine very many others doing so. It is equivalent to a 14:24 over 5000m.

On the Men's side Mark Carroll's 7:30 is by far the strongest. That is equivalent to a sub 13 5000m. I think only 1 maybe 2 people not of African origin have gone faster ever over 3000m than Mark. Hugely underrated athlete in the eyes of the Irish public and media.

The womens marathon could stand a long time too.

Hard to see McHugh's javelin record falling anytime soon.

Agreed about McHugh. But if you are looking at the irish records in terms of how close they are to the world record and the times/ performances that today's best athletes in the world are doing then its hard to look beyond Sonia's times really, the 3000m more so than all.

Catherina's 2:22:23 will take some beating aswell mind you.

Could you not get Paula to claim her Irish passport and then retrospectively claim the previous records as being Irish?

Think we have a better chance in claiming Mary "O Shea" Keitany;)

The IAAF Scoring tables 2011 is a good way of looking at all of this actually.

For women, Sonia's 8:21.64 for 3000m scores 1238 points. This equates to the following in other events:

    100m - 10.78
    100mH - 12.33
    200m - 21.91
    400m - 49.03
    400mH - 52.95
    800m - 1:55.32
    1500m - 3:56.04
    Mile - 4:14.01
    3000m SC - 9:02.65
    5000m - 14:22.18
    10000m - 30:10.89
    Half Marathon - 1:06:17
    Marathon - 2:19:35
    20km Walk - 1:24:13
    High Jump - 2.03
    Pole Vault - 4.94
    Long Jump - 7.16
    Triple Jump - 15.34

When you look at it this way you start to realise just how impressive 8:21.64 for 3000m is.

I'll do the same for Mark Carroll's 3k in a moment.

Mark Carroll's 7:30.36 for 3000m for men scores 1237 points on the IAAF Scoring Tables 2011. This equates to:

    100m - 9.92
    110mH - 13.08
    200m - 19.89
    400m - 44.11
    400mH - 47.71
    800m - 1:42:83
    1500m - 3:30.57
    Mile - 3:47.27
    3000m SC - 8:04.64
    5000m - 12:52.70
    10000m - 26:53.54
    Half Marathon - 58:57
    Marathon - 2:05:52
    20km Walk - 1:18:02
    50km Walk - 3:37:47
    High Jump - 2:37
    Pole Vault - 5.93
    Long Jump - 8.52
    Triple Jump - 17.75
    Javelin - 90.68

WOW, his record is even better than I thought!!

I'm afraid I don't know enough about the athletics scene in Ireland to give an educated answer to the original question. But one thing that strikes me looking at the records, are the records for the 100m and the 4x100m. How is it that no Irish man has gone under 10 seconds for 100m? And yet the record for the 4x100m is under 40 seconds? The numbers are different, but it's a similar situation with the women. Maybe there's something obvious I'm overlooking, but can anyone please explain?
    Thanks

In relays only the first runner is starting from a static start. The next three are already accelerating by the time they have the baton. As such you will always notice peoples relays splits usually faster than their normal PBs over the same distance

100m straight is standing start while the relay has 3 legs with a flying start.

I don't think ANY whitey has ever gone sub 10 have they? Allan Wells and Arman Hary 10.0 hand-timed, the first one wind-assisted. Ecoli you're the statto who'll know for sure.

Christophe Lamaitre ran 9.97 last year.

And he's had a pretty solid season opener over 200m this year, a 20.33 into a considerable headwind last weekend.

As said, Sonia's 3k is the best by a country mile.

Mark Carroll is the most underrated athlete (maybe sportsman) Ireland has ever had. If you look at Irish records and rate them with regards to what records would be competitive in todays Golden League meets, only a few stand up to scrutiny and Carrolls 3k mark is one. 60 seconds per lap for 7.5 laps is scary running.
