Domain Name Hosting - question

Firstly, I hope this is the right forum.

I have registered a .ie domain name with register356.com. I am a commercial photographer.

Now, if I type the name into the address bar, I am directed to their site. Fair enough. I haven't gone live yet.

    1. Am I obliged to use register365.com to host my site?

    2. If not, should I be considering another host?

    3. Anything else I should be taking into consideration?

    Thanks.

    D.

You can change the nameservers for your domain within your control panel.

So if you get other hosting, you can get the nameserver details from the new host and then use the control panel to get the name to point to the new hosting.

The only issue is that you'll be billed separately for the name and the hosting, which might be a minor nuisance re accounting and expiry/renewal dates.

    No. You can change host.

    2. If not, should I be considering another host?
That's completely upto you. If you are not happy with the current host, you can go to domain control panel make that change.

    3. Anything else I should be taking into consideration?
Make sure you select good hosting provider (i mean don't just compromise quality for couple of euros. per year)

I'm not sure how much of a difference it makes, but I was led to believe that the location of your hosting server affects your search engine results. This I heard at a conference from one of Google's own staff earlier this year.

Register365's servers are in the UK, while hostingireland's servers are in Dublin. I would have some belief in it because I had a client who went for $5 a year hosting with a company whose servers were based in Chicago, and we couldn't get them to rate very well on Google.

I'd like to hear what other folks experiences are?

"location" in search results is based on GeoIP and TLD

So a site won't be recognised as Irish if it's a .com / .org / etc and is hosted outside Ireland

The same applies to the abused/bastardised TLDs like .fm & .tv - they're other countries' TLDs, so if they're not hosted in Ireland they'll be - correctly - viewed as being from Macedonia and Transylvania.

A .ie hosted outside Ireland should be OK

It can but other factors can help. The most obvious is using a ccTLD domain such as .ie as your primary domain if you are targetting the Irish market. Likewise .co.uk for the UK etc.
This I heard at a conference from one of Google's own staff earlier this year.
I have, of late, become very cynical about the supposed expertise of Google when it comes to ccTLD markets. It is easy to find websites in the gTLDs but the ccTLDs are a bit more complex.
Register365's servers are in the UK, while hostingireland's servers are in Dublin.
Some of R365's servers might be physically in the UK and may be on UK IP ranges but most are on Irish IP ranges from what I remember. I would have to check the newer ones.
I would have some belief in it because I had a client who went for $5 a year hosting with a company whose servers were based in Chicago, and we couldn't get them to rate very well on Google.
It is possible to select the target country for a website in the Google Webmaster Tools where the domain is a gTLD. Some Irish hosters use US hosting and their customers seem quite oblivious to that fact. But with Google, there are other factors that will affect the positioning of the site in the SERPs.

    Regards...jmcc
