I am a bit unclear about the relationship between design temp and limiting temp for steel in a fire, can anybody clear up this for me. What happens at design temp and what happens at limiting temp?

In general: The limiting temperature is the temperature at which a member will fail (because capacity is reduced to the load stresses) - the design temperature is the temperature imposed by a design fire. If limiting temperature > design temperature that's usually a good way around. Check your bs 5950 for more info and actual reliable advice!

Thanks, I was thinking that was it, I just needed somebody to say it and clear it up in my head.
