Losing my hours, Losing my job??

So here is a little background. I was working part time in a local supermarket. I've been there 7 years. When I went to college I took up my weekend work. The manager and I got on very well so this wasnt a problem.

Recently there has been a change in management (sickened) so my relationship with the new manager isnt as solid. I went on work placement from college and changed my hours just to Saturday's. The placement only covered expenses so i needed the extra dosh.

The shops sales recently plummeted and hours were cut. My problem is that I havent had any hours for a month and they are being giving to someone who joined the company last year but was previously doing 35 hour week, he still has his 35 hours but only because he took everyone elses.. I'm good at what I do and have often been told such. The person doing literally taken my place is on his final warning.

So I was just wondering....Are they actually allowed to do this to me?? Basically phase me out of the establishment???

Hi there sorry to hear your story but unfortunally you can do noting about this unless you are a mamber of a union. By any chance is this person on a less hourly rate than you if so that is why you are being forced out. You can go into you local citezens information office abd they might be able to give you more advice.

So you had good part-time hours?
You requested them to change you to weekend-only work?
You then requested to change to Saturday work?

It sounds like you phased yourself out of the establishment!

Know exactly how you are feeling. Only advice I have is keep your head down, say nothing critical at all, keep things to yourself and paste a smile on your face. Do your job and nothing more. Reality is that no job in retail is safe, and it is more likely friends will be given the hours, as was your experience with your previous manager.

I think you should do your best to find an alternative position somewhere, because you will end up on the books /payroll from current place, and still they are not obliged to give you hours. It is generally discretionary.

Do you have an employment contract? If so, look at the terms and conditions, they may have a minimum number of hours they said they would give you, and if you are not getting them, you could have something to use to get more.

This would be last option, and prepare to be person non grata afterwards.

    Good luck with it
