Chipped tooth with filling

Don't know how I did it but I got a slight chip around a tooth that's been filled in. It's to the front of the tooth, so now when I rub my tongue over it, all I can feel and taste is the amalgam from the filling (a tad sharp too).

It's not sharp enough or in a position to do any damage (cut / lacerations to cheek or tongue) but because it's newly discovered, all I could do it prod it and poke it.

Will this wear away in time or am I better to get to looked at? Am not the best with dentists (probably due to my mother being a dental assistant).

Most likely scenarios are a cusp has fractured off, or you've got decay under/around the filling and this has weakened the tooth in the area and eventually caused it to break away. Best to get it looked at, if its decayed it will continue to rot 'till you get a toothache and then its root canal or extraction. Repairing a fractured cusp is usually straightforward, but if there's a lot of tooth missing you might need the tooth crowned.
Obviously you'd need to see it to know whats going on, but these would probably be the most likely things.

There's a tiny sliver of tooth missing.. so might get it looked at alright.

Might get the mother's advice on what she thinks... she's seen enough of them in her time! :)

I recently had a similar piece of tooth 'fall off' exposing part of a filling (this happened when brushing!), there was a rough line before so I figure it was cracked. I had no decay but I had a filling put in to smooth it out and to save the tooth from wear when brushing, but the dentist said I didn't have to.

If there's decay however then you need to get it fixed or it will only get worse.

No decay.. the tooth looks healthy enough.

It's a very thin sliver off the top of it but it is slightly noticeable when I run my tongue over it.

To be honest - it's a tad less noticeable now than it was yesterday.
