Got a phone call from the UK (0044), answered it and was someone with an Asian accent, hung up before I got to hear the name of the company.

They rang back, didnt bother answering this time but took down the number - 00442071060330

Turns out to be a market research company called either Gain Throught Knowledge or Loop Group Marketing

Not sure where they got my number, but if you get a call from this number, don't bother answering

Oh thats right, deafening the low paid asian worker witha foghorn is the right thing to do.

I'm sure the company directors will decide to shut down the business on hearing you've just blown some lads eardrums.

Or maybe just maybe he'll be replaced by the morning with no income.

But hey whatever makes you feel cool bro

Fail. You do realise that all 3 of those things would be louder for YOU than for someone else down a low quality DTMF phone line, yeah?

    Here...

    Less of the paranoia there.

Tell them to remove you from their sample, by law they can't call again. Well that's how it works with Irish market research cold callers. Your number was probably randomly generated by a computer, your in no way special as they out put thousands of numbers.

There are different ways these companies get numbers. Sometimes they "buy" lists - you know when you tick a box on a website saying it's ok for third parties to contact you in relation to x, y or z - never ever to that. They make it sound like it's third parties who offer similar/appropriate products/services, but in actual fact a lot of the time they are just selling your details to anyone who will pay.

Another way is random dialing. A computer is given the start of a phone number - country code, area code etc. and generates the last few digits randomly. I did telemarketing very briefly. The system was dialing everything from fax machines to emergency numbers. It's such a bad way to do things.

As someone who did it briefly I understand how shit it is to have to make the calls but in all honesty it's worse for the person taking the call. The person making the call is getting paid to essentially be a nuisance. I received some abuse. I deserved it.
