Hey lads, just had a quick question about this phone.
Was thinking of getting it on Meteor pre pay for 250 (have a meteor voucher and not touching bill).

Anyway, can anyone tell me if you take a picture with it, can you set it straight as the desktop background ? I had a Samsung Tocco ages ago and it spread the background across 3 screens so you had to flick accross to the see the whole pic. I would just like to take a pic and set it to background.

Oh, and if any of ye have it, is it a good phone?

    Cheers!

PS. hope this is the right section as it's an Android phone?

All android phones have this feature. Personally haven't tried it. But if its active with the stock launcher you can avail it via alternative launcher from the Market.

ADW or LaucherPro or anything other one for that matter.

Its a good little phone from reviews ;) its a value for money so dont expect 3D games or anything to work properly. But will work grand otherwise

cheers thanks man, this would be my first android phone and 2nd touch screen. Seems like a simple thin but was so crap when i couldn't simply take a photo and have it as a background without a load of cropping that made it look shiite. I sold the tocco and went to nice and simple nokia fold made calls and txts and that was about it :) Have to get with the times tho.

Oh the Tocco in my opinion shouldnt even have been allowed to be out in the market. It was very slow and choppy. And had the worst touch screen of them all. Had to use them on few occasions and just got frustrated with having to use that horrible touch screen.

Phones like that, NOK5280 and the likes put a bad image in the head of consumers that touch screens are horrible. Tbh if you spend that extra tad bit it can be better than the keyboard to navigate the phone. Requires no pressure what so over to navigate it. Just point of contact.

I had 5800 and the N97 before going for HD2 and now Samsung Omnia 7. And the screen difference between low end phone touch screens (resistive screens) vs the HD2, Omnia 7 (capacitive screen) and other higher end phones is huge.

Galaxy Ace has the capacitive touch screen so its effortless navigation. Dont need to push or apply force. Just point of contact to skin only.

Ah that sounds great man! I had won the Tocco and was my 1st touch screen. Cmpletely put me off them. Didn't about the different types. This is the most I ever spent on a phone, wouldn't go over the 250. I just saw a youtube vid as well showing SWYPE txt, looks amazing!

Wait till you try it :) Its harder than it looks. Personally i never liked it :P

But suppose it takes getting used to

ah crap haha i couldn't get used to the tocco but was easier to give up with that since I got it free. Splasing 250 would make me more persistent :)

Well tbh you only fork out a large sum out once.

Since i bought my first real smart phone i only spent an average of 100 quid to upgrade next year.

I paid 380 for a new HD2. Then sold nearly a year after for 280. Then bought a new HD7 for 350. Sold that for 340 and bought a new Omnia 7 for 250 :)

When you look at it that way to upgrade i spend no more than what a person normally would spend on a dumb phone yearly :)

Easiest way probably is to sign up on a contract and get a new phone. Then just sell and buy yourself a year after :) save yourself getting into a long contract.

Good way of looking at it! although I had bill once and never again. I only spend 20 a month on cred with meteor and does me fine. Reminds me, must check how much it use to surf the web as I'd say I might be doing a bit of that on this phone!

    69c for 50MB per day

I was the same :) Im just on Bill Pay Lite now. 25pm for free calls/texts to meteor and 200 mins and texts and 1GB of data :)

1GB of data for extra 5 euro i can afford that :)

Wow, that makes it very tempting to go back to bill. Just checked and the Ace would only be about 50 quid. I got some thinking to do! Thanks for the info man!

Got the Galaxy Ace today, what a class phone!!! gonna spend ages messing round with it but one thing I can't find is how do you change profiles like one for general use, one for work (vibrate only) etc.

In settings > Sound. You can set to have two separate volume settings

When in the home-screen just hold volume down till its down to vibrate. I think you can also do that if you pull down the notification bar and there should be a toggle at the top saying vibrate? Im not sure does the ace has it.

Either way if you hold volume down the whole way it will go into vibrate or silent. Though media will still stay on loud :)

You dont have profiles like you used to on Nokias though

Ah thanks again man. Handiest thing so will be the dropdown menu at the top to silence or enable sound. so many apps to choose from my head is gonna explode!

I was just wondering how long the battery lasts. Also, can you install apps on the memory card rather than the internal memory?

Battery only lasts about a day, saying that i'm messing around with it a lot. I downloaded advanced task killer that kills any programs open that you aren't using and noticed a difference alright. You can move certain apps onto the sd card but I think there is an app that allows you to move more on.

I also downloaded Samsung Keis from the samsung website so when you plug the phone into a pc, it doesn't just charge, it allows you to move files back and forth to the directory of your choice, very handy.

I have a smartphone which doesnt allow you to put apps on the sd card. I find that it clogs up very quickly. Android 2.3 is available for the Ace, so, even 2.2 should allow you to install apps on the SD card. So you would really recommend this phone? It sounds like the phone for me...

well its my 1st smartphone so can't compare it to other ones but i love it! exceeding my expectations and still so many apps to get to improve performance.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,303 ✭✭✭max life

Ah right. I have a smartphone aswell for the past year and would never change back to a normal mobile phone. I am still finding out new things about it after a year. Thanks for the info.

Dont use task killers. Their pointless. Samsung should have their own task killer anyway if it comes to that point.

Try holding down the home button for recent apps to come up. Is there a task manager button under recent apps?

By killing them your more than likely just rebooting them.

I used to do the same. But i got a battery drain widget to test this out and actually noticed when i killed the apps the phone battery would drain faster cause your making the phone kill lots of tasks and then their rebooting again. So its not really worth it...Just use back button if you dont want them to be actually in the background.

I have a Galaxy Ace and I cannot get apps to move to the SD card. Does anyone know how to do it?

If I try to download an app that can be moved to SD, I get told "cannot save to USB or Storage Card". If I remove the SD card, the app will download, but when I put the card back in, I can't move it, I get "Failed to move application".

I downloaded the App2SD but still no joy. I've formatted the card, even tried a different card and still no joy. Cannot find anything on the net that I could understand. Even got the IT guy at work to look at it and he doesn't know!

Can anyone help? I am not very savvy when it comes to these things, this is my first smartphone and I've no idea about rooting and the like or even what they mean :o

Thanks Evol, I noticed those programs were just reappearing anyway was very annoying, i'll try what you said thanks!

Shoe, my gf had the same problem. Turn off your phone with sd card inserted. turn it back on and try download and install an app then. This worked fine for her. I guessed it just needed a reboot with the sd card to be recognised properly.

HAHA excellent man. On the off chance, anyone here having problems receiving MMS messages on meteor? we are both having the same problem, only a download button comes up but nothing happens.

I am having a small problem with my Galaxy Ace on meteor. I have Samsung Kies on my computer. I connected it to my phone and it said there was a firmware update available. I followed the instructions onscreen until it said downloading firmware update. When it was completely downloaded it just went back to the start and said the same firmware update was available. It does this over and over again. Anyone else having the same problem???

For the last few weeks, I am getting a message on my Galaxy Ace saying 'Emergency Calls Only. I will have full reception but can't make or receive any calls. This happens about 2 or 3 times a day and will last about 15-20 minutes at a time. My gf has the exact same phone on the same network (meteor) and never gets this message. I tried powering it off, taking out the battery for 15 mins, etc. and this still happens. Is it time to call Samsung or is there something else I can try?

    Thanks!

I know this was months ago but anyway. If you root the phone (which voids warranty) and install Link2SD, you can install apps to an Ext3 partition on the SD card. Using this method, I've a 90 apps installed with 40mb space remaining.

Next time that happens, try put it into Flight Mode and take it out of Flight Mode to restart the receivers and see if it does anything.

I put it into flight mode next time it happened. Waited a minute, took it out of flight mode and still getting Emergency Calls Only. Not sure if I should get onto Meteor first since I bought it off them.

have an issue with the Ace I have now. There was a firmware update that went though last night for me (could have been a while ago, hadnt checked for updates for a while) but ever since, the phone will automatically switch on 3G regardless. the only time it wont, is when I either disable it in flight mode, or turn on the wifi. Its a right pain in the hole, coz at night time, I switch off all connections, but prefer just to do it simply on the 'quick settings' app I use. Its really annoying, and is only happening since the update. Woke up this morning with an empty phone and 40+MB of usage even tho the phone was on the bedside locker in sleep mode all night.

is there any solution to this? or something that can be done? I hadnt bothered rooting the phone as the stock was fine for me, but getting serious issues with the internal memory so going about rooting now.

You dont have profiles like you used to on Nokias though

If you download Simple Sound you can use profiles exactly like old school nokias, it's extremely handy, I find. When you download it in order to add an icon for it to your homescreen you have to add it as a widget, even though it actually looks and acts just like a regular icon.
