    Hi,

Need to get two new lengths of Coaxial Cable for me Sky+ box plus the connectors that will connect it to the back of the Box. Where is the best place to pick what I need up in and around Cork City?

So looks like I can find what I need in Maplin but what type of cable should I get. I googled and a couple of places say 75ohm cable but the ones that where originally insalled by Sky where 100ohm?

75 ohm. Any reference to 100 on the cable refers to the diameter of the centre conductor.
Ideally use CT100, WF100, TX100, PF100 etc. Copper-on-copper cable for best performance. Ensure F connectors are a good fit.
Maplin's are savagely expensive for cables and connectors. Try JJ Dwyers or a local professional satellite specialist ;)

Only reason I say Maplins is because I know they will have them. Not sure of any Satellite Specialist in Cork City that I can get too during Lunch hour today. I'll try the golden pages see what comes up.

Also the Two Connections on the wall coming from the Dish - Is there a better way to connect them to the Satelitte, I currently have these types of connecters connecting to the wall socket but they seem to be a bit loose

JJ Dwyers has been recommended before for supplies in Cork, very reasonable and helpful.
The connectors you are using now that you posted a pic of are useless,if you are using a wall plate simply take it off, remove the bits behind it and run the cable straight through.Looks tidy,if you have to join the cable use f-connectors and joiners.
No point buying good cable and using bad connectors. The guys in the shop will offer any extra advice you need.

    Hi,

Thanks for the responses - I took the wall mount off adn replaced it with a wall socket that take F-Connectors. I got the new cables etc. Sadly the new cables haven't resolved the issue.

What is happening is that on my Sky+ Box I was getting a jumping/no sound from E4, E4+1, Channel4, Channel4+1, More4 and more music channels. But only these ones. After ringing sky I had to remove the cables from the back of the Sky Box then I noticed that the F-Connectors where not on correctly and wouldn't tighten, so the guy in Sky said to get the new Cables...

Now with the new Cables I am getting the same issue with the same channel. Signal Tests etc say everything is OK plus I am receiving everyother Channel I should correctly.

Has anyone come accross this before. I found reference to moving Wireless Phone away from the Box etc. but nothing has worked. Sky want me to pay €100 for a guy to call out now to look at it.

Hi Chris, have you tried changing the defualt transponder in the installer menu to the transponder you are having a problem with ? The signal quality on the box is only set to one transponder at a time so probably not showing up the problem you are having. If you change and it shows a lower reading then you can begin to eliminate causes one by one by for example swapping the input cables to see if the problem improves/disimproves. If you get really stuck you will probably find a local specialist is cheaper than sky. The other option is to ring up and cancel your sub, they usually change their tune then on the call out cost :)

That's a cordless phone. I'm certain of it. To be sure plug the phone out entirely. If I'm right the channels will instantly go back to normal. If that doesn't work could your neighbours have a cordless phone nearby?

Tried it - Plugged out the Cordless Phone and plugged out the Wireless Router, no difference. The issue used to happen before I got teh Phone and Wireless Router.

For a complete noob - how does one go about changing the transponder? I can get into the install menu and the sky guy had me reset the LNB etc..

I'm going to ring again tonight and see how they change there tune about the call out if I want to cancel. I getting a loan of another Sky+ box later and I'm going to see it that has the same issues

So got a lone of another Box from a friend and all the channels worked - rang sky and this guy had me do a different test - Services then 48 - I got a £ sign in the input 1 box which is a Hardware Fault on the box.

Box is out of warranty so will have to either get a box myself and have sky then match my viewing card up to it or get them to send an engineer out who will either fix the box or replace it for 100 euro.

Is this worth it or would it be possible to get a new Sky+ box myself? I've been pondering about getting a Spiderbox 9000HD or something similar...

I'd try the cancellation route, tell sky you cannot afford the 100

I see you mention some other box there. I think everyone knows what they do. I suggest you dont go down that road as it can land you in it.

If you are really thinking of moving away from Sky then you should think of a hd combo box - like the Ferguson HD200 combo or Edision Argus 2n1. No bills, but no Sky Sports. Mind you you get all the Irish stations and the 3e and all the stations listed at Freesat.co.uk.

Ring them again, tell them the box is faulty. If they persist with the €100 and buy new box malarkey, then ask to be put through to cancelations. They WILL change there tune, believe me, they are hemorrhaging customers and will do anything to keep them.

Will try ringing them again tomorrow, Don't need Sky Sports, I only have the basic 27 package from sky, got rid of the movie recently.

How old is the box? If it were about two years old or less I'd tell Sky to shove their warranty and claim that the box wasn't of merchantable quality as per the intention of the sale of goods and supply of services act 1980 and different EU directives.

Ring cancellations and tell them a UPC rep called to your house and you are considering joining up-you'd be amazed what response you'll get. They'll more than likely replace the box for free.

The BOX is over three years old - but I'll be ringing the Cancellations laters, because this issue has been happening constantly since we got the sky every couple of months - but last night was the first and only time someone from sky asked me to run a health check and he immediately told me it was a Hardware issue when I called out a code.

So I'll be making the point that if this test was done while it was in warranty they would have had to replace the box.

Rang them just now - Two Options a free call out and he'll replace the Sky+ box or a HD Box for €39

    Spoilt for choice.....

With the HD Box, without a HD Sub can I receive any Free-to-Air HD Channels?
