Handy if we knew what phone you have.. What Android version you're using, and if it's rooted or not..

    HTC Desire (not HD)

    Android 2.2

I dont know what you mean by rooted? I familiar in linux but not in Android.

Rooted means you have access to the linux kernel, what Android is based on. So you're Desire is standard, when the phone screen is off and you press the power button it turns the phone off instantly?

Rooting gives you superuser permission. Rooting is the hacking to give you access to the Android root folders. Someone with a desire will post how

Its not a root issue, forget what the other poster says. The power button has an issue. Did you drop it? You might try taking the battery out for about 10 minutes then putting it back in and check it over.
If all else fails factory reset.

Finally if that doesnt work. Its repair centre for it sorry :(

    what listermint said.

Or you can root and install a custom rom that allows you to unlock the screen using the middle trackpad button thingy.
