To be frank most of them are rubbish that contain poor work and spout the same rubbish over and over again. Photo blogs would be a better way to spend your time. I also just discovered this nice little E-mag

They can be quite good for learning although it is true that ultimately there's only so many subjects to be covered and they do become repetitive after a few years. I'd recommend choosing one rather than chopping and changing as many of them run similar articles at different times - sticking with the same one reduces the chance of repetition.

For my 2c worth, I have a susbscribtion to Practical Photography which i find a good all-rounder. It's sister magazine Digital Photo seems to be quite good if you're more into photoshop tips although I agree with the last post that if it's just software advice you're after then it's out there in abundance for nothing.

I got a christmas present of a subscription to Practical Photography - its so so. There is some interesting stuff in there. But I expect it'll essentially be repeating material as the months go on

is a good magazine but is expensive if you buy every issue.

I pick a copy up every now and then but realistically unless you are a magazine fan you would be better off saving the pennies and buying books instead.

Oh dear- I just love photography magazines. 21 years ago I started buying Photo Answers, I had a praktica SLR, and knew no one who used an SLR. There was no Internet and the books I got from the Library were dull. Photo Answers taught me exposure, stops, depth of field, hyperfocal distances, a bit about composition etc, and learning it on a manual SLR it stuck- I often use an incident meter and manual exposure on my DSLR. I don't use photoshop much- but for when I do, what I learned with Digital Photo is sufficient. As above I do agree that camera magazines do stick to a limited amount of articles- after a while you've seen it all before, but even still they can be good for a bit of refresher, and just for impressive pictures. I regularly browse the shelves, then grumble that all the mags have some interesting articles, but none of them have enough. An alternative is the Focus guide series- stocked with the mags, they are simple easy to follow and have a lot of good info... they cost about double what a mag costs...There is no right way or wrong way to get into photography - just enjoy it, and if a bright catchy magazine with rescycled pictures adds to the enjoyment, then buy some. Photography Monthly, Amateur Photographer, Practical Photography, Dslr User and DSLR Photography are all good, while Digital Photo and Digital Photography Enthusiast are good for Photoshop.....

One other thought - before buying any books, check wh3s in the library.

British Journal of Photography - consistently good and the new monthly print version is very attractive.
