I'm looking for a short list of the best horror films out there, from any year.
I have recently watch alot of horror films and was bored by them.
I'm looking for some actually scary film, or something that will frighten and isnt just gore and blood because i dont find it disturbing.

If it helps you get an idea of what i liked these are the films i recently watched and what i though of them:

The exorcist (original one from 1973), was a big let down, not scary at all.
The Ring. didn't find it scary, was very bored.
Dawn of the dead(remake). Was a good film but again not scary.
Insidious. good film over all but wasn't scary.
I spit on your grave. good film but still not scary.
The last house on the left. another good film but still no scary parts.

Maybe im searching in the wrong places, but I'm wondering if anybody has some real scare factor films they know of and have seen.

I also know the japaniese films are supposed to be scarier than English speaking films but i dont want to have to read subtitles etc.

    thanks in advanced.
    Dar.

Martyrs and Dread are decent flicks. Not sure if you'll be scared though, they are a tad disturbing.

Also Asian horrors are amazing be sure that they have a totally different take on what makes a good scare. If you were to watch Ringu or Pulse (not the sh*tty US remake), you might be surprised at how unsettling they are.

Disturbing is always good, I'm lookin for something that actually scares people alot.

Have read about ringu but because its Asain I feel I wont be able to watch the whole lot because I'm not a fan of having to read all the subtitles. ( havent watched any Asain films so not even sure if there all subtitles. )

    Will check it out tho.
    Thanks for the advise.

The Descent was my favourite horror film of the last few years. Just make sure it's the version that released in Europe first. The US version came out a year later with a useless alternate ending.

I recommend watching [REC] alone.............in the dark.............with headphones.

Twice I had to stop that movie thinking somebody was in my house :pac:

    He isnt after subtitles.

OP,the lack of english language horrors that provide scares rather than just gore is staggering so unless you are willing to change yer selection process you will likely wind up rather disappointed.

I am looking for good horror movies too. One girl at work said: paranormal activity is very scary movie. I am watching it now ad it's such a ****...

I know hellrisier was awesome. Phantasm was epic too.

I know you mentioned few of those asian horror movies. Can you tell me a few good ones and where to find them?

I don't mind subtitles, I leanr my English by watching DVDs with subs.

Chances are you have probably already seen it but John Carpenter's The Thing (1982) is an amazing horror movie.

I would go as far as to say one of the best movies are made. Especially since this pre-dates CGI technology and just have a brilliant story.

Im dont mind watchin scary films at all but i couldnt watch the grudge, tried to twice on my own and had to turn it off.....always at the bit where the chinese kid comes running outa the actic at him!!!

It always makes me sad when people won't watch movies because they are subtitled. You are missing out on so many wonderful movies because of it, like [REC] for instance.

Be wary that [REC] starts off slowly - I don't think anything happens really after the first 10 or so minutes, so just give it time. Once things start to happen.. well .. you'll see.

Also check out the Orphanage, though it can be more unnerving than scary.

    thanks for the heads up.

And ye i remember lookin at the cover picture for the orphanage and never watched it.

The Orphanage is one of the greatest films ever made. You don't get horror films like it anymore. It's just perfect. No gore (
Except for that one part when the woman gets hit in traffic
), no teens ****ing in the cabin and getting killed, just a very real situation that keep you on edge. I won't say anything else about the film at all because you really are best going into it without knowing anything about it.

[Rec] is the scariest film I have watched. The ending is just...****ing hell! Still have to get around to seeing part 2.

Forgive me, I'm about to give you a very big list, so skip if you want, but I genuinely feel, after years of experience, everything here should be seen.

    20s
    Nosferatu

    30s
    Frankenstein
    Bride of Frankenstein

    40s
    Cat People
    The Wolfman
    I Walked With a Zombie
    Dead of Night

    50s
    Night of the Demon
    Invasion of the Bodysnatchers

    60s
The Haunting- Simple yet absolutely terrifying, one of my all-time favourites. Avoid the remake
The Innocents- Similar, subtle and creepy
    Rosemary's Baby
Night of the Living Dead (free online legitimately, it's out of copyright, and one of the greatest horrors ever)
    Psycho
    The Birds

    70s
    The Exorcist
    Halloween
    The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
    Don't Look Now
    Invasion of the Bodysnatchers (Remake)
    The Amityville Horror
    The Wicker Man
    The Omen
    Alien
    Salem's Lot (miniseries technically)

    80s
    The Changeling
    Pet Semeraty
    The Shining
    The Exorcist III
    The Fog
    The Thing
    Prince of Darkness
Creepshow (more funny than scary but still great fun)
The Evil Dead trilogy (Ditto, but the first one especially can be quite creepy)
Return of the Living Dead (Ditto too)
    The Terminator

    90s
    Jacob's Ladder
    In the Mouth of Madness
The Blair Witch Project (not for everyone though)
    Misery
    Event Horizon
    The Ring (original)

    00s
[REC] Subtitles aren't very intrusive and not very important. The Spanish and Catalan for "ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!" are, it turns out, "ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!" Just with a bit of an accent
    The Descent
    The Mist
    The Orphanage
Drag Me to Hell (manages the difficult trick of being both funny and terrifying)
The House of the Devil (little-known, but a great 80s throwback)
    28 Days/Weeks Later

    10s
Insidious (old-school and a bit camp and silly but has some great scares. Should still be in some cinemas)
The Ward (old school, not original, but good fun)
Marble Hornets (an ongoing web series using youtube and twitter, well worth checking out)
    http://twitter.com/#!/marblehornets
    http://www.youtube.com/marblehornets

Apologies for the length, I couldn't help myself and I honestly believe all of these are scary and worth watching. Lots of good recommendations from others above as well

Black Christmas (1973) is a great horror movie, just keep away from the remake they did a few years back, god that was pants!

Don't mention it, and I've definitely watched more horror films than is healthy, so I should warn you, my tolerance for scary stuff is pretty high! What's kinda scary for me seems to be a lot scarier to people I watch horrors with :D.

Ye my tolerance for scary stuff is extremely high, as in it has to be the scariest thing ever and at a time least expected, then i might get a small fright ha.

    A Serbian Film.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,598 ✭✭✭aligator_am

An incredibly creepy film worth checking out is The Woman in Black, it's based on a play AFAIK, no blood or guts but will freak you out.

Haven't seen The Orphanage but hear it's chilling, but it's a Spanish movie so like subtitles involved.

EDIT: Another to look out for is Children shouldn't play with dead things, lol the music alone will freak you out.

The video dead is disturbing too, haha zombies coming out of the telly warped my young mind :)

Demons is another goddun', not super scary but has some good frights in there.

I found Spookies sorta creepy too, but I think that was more to do with that chick turning into a giant spider :S

Haven't seen Susperia in years but seem to remember it freaking me out, same goes with Martin.

You should be able to find a few gems from the 70's and in particular the 80's, lots of them were banned for years but are now getting uncut releases.

Also, if you're a gore hound, you could look up a Japanese movie called grotesque, but it's pretty warped tbh, sort of like Hostel x10.

It's not horror, just gore and perverted crap.

    I would recommend

    Asian:
    Ring
    Ring0
    Dark Water
    Shutter

    Oldies:
    The Changeling
    Don't Look Now
    Rosemary's Baby
    Psycho

    Modern:
    Rec
    The Orphanage
    Blair Witch
    The Others

They're the ones that scared me a bit, nothing like the fear when you see something as a kid, even something as tame as an American Vampire in Brooklyn or whatever it's called! I miss that fear :(
