08 Fiesta - intermittent starting problem

friend has a 08 Fiesta petrol and every now & again, it will fail to start.

Key goes into ignition and when turned to start position will not kick over starter motor. No issue with lights etc when ignition is in first position or 2nd position so that sort of rules out the battery.

Car never dies aswell when its on the move either and no sign of any alternator tell tale lights.

I've asked her to check her spare key to see if maybe there is an issue with the electronics in the key but if the spare key displays same symptoms, does anyone have other suggestions?

Only other I can think of is a bad connection in the ignition barrell?

Could also be a bad earth, coroded connection on started from battery etc.

I've seen only one of these give similar symptoms, the problem was the immobiliser in the instrument cluster.

If you listen under the bonnet while someone turns the key, can you hear a relay click? Can you push start it?

If so, it might not be electronics, it could just be a dodgy starter motor. I had an (older) car where the starter was on the blink, and maybe 1 time in 10 would not start.

Whacking the starter with the jackhandle usually worked.
