    Hi,

Myself and my mates heading to Loas for 3 days at the end of May to do Tubing. We will then be heading to the Thailand islands for 2 weeks. We were in Thailand last year, so we have the main vaccines (however for Thailand they aren’t too necessary anyway) However; we were wondering would we need malaria tablets as we are heading to Laos this time? Will only be in Laos a short time, but I suppose maybe it wouldn’t make a difference if it were 3 days or 3 months..

    Thanks

Why do people give an answer like no with no explanation?
Anyway if I were you I would get them, Laos is a malarial country. I would especially take them as you are going tubing and chances are ye will still be on the river when dusk sets in and will be attacked my mosquitos then and I doubt ye will be thinking much about repellent.
12 malorone tablets is all ye need so I think its worth it

Deffo worth getting, all it will take is one bit from the wrong bug and you have malaria! So take the tabs and then you dont have to worry or even think about it.

    Don't bother... Seriously.

You still get malaria anyway if you're bitten.. Something the entire world seems to forget. Kind of ironic since you get sick and think it couldn't be malaria so don't get it treated quickly. Dengue fever is what you should be worried about but you can't do anything about it.
If you're only going to Vang Vieng, you can get to a hospital easily and get a course of anti-malarials so I really advise not wasting your time and money on them.

Because it was the right answer. In case the OP missed it the first time. No. Enjoy Laos and the tubing. You'll have a class time.

ps You should be more concerned about the strong current in the river. Be safe!

Jesus I must have missed the news when it was announced that Laos isnt malarial anymore...
There are thousands of cases of malaria in Laos every year, why take the risk?

Don't you read.. Anti-Malarials don't prevent malaria. What possible reason is there to take them?

They greatly reduce the chance of getting malaria as they kill the parasites early on. If you do contract malaria it wont be as bad as if you hadnt taken the tablets.
Iv never heard of a doctor not recommending malaria tablets for Laos

If you're going to the main areas - Vientiane, Vang Vieng and Luang Prabang you'll be grand without them

If I'm near a hospital in Vang Vieng, I want to get malaria properly.. Not a slow and deceiving malaria where I could just move on thinking I didn't get it.

If I was in a jungle, yeah fine.. But not in Vang Vieng imo.
