Whomever would have thunk it? ;)

What work did it need doing to get it through? I thought it was shot to bits?

I changed the tail lamp bulbs as one of them wasn't working and I cleaned the interior. And did my usual topping up of oil (which I need to every 600 so miles).

Didn't bother spending any money on the Puma as I was relying on the NCT to give me the faults in the car so I could fix only what was wrong with it. But turns out I don't need to fix anything on it!

My little black knight never lets me down! :)

    Chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!

    Congrats :)

How much oil does it use every 600 miles?

About 1litre. I think the pistons rings are gone which is causing the engine to burn oil. I was worried the car would fail on emissions but it passed!

I think this is always the way to go. I put my wee Corsa through, everything I expected to fail, didn't (still got em fixed/replaced a little later). The two things that did fail, were an easy fixed, and passed in a 30 second visual retest.

    Well done :)

So it seems the pulling to one side, shocks and bushings etc weren't too bad at all :)

Well for the NCT's sake, its not broken, so well, its keep on till its keeping on!

I think the brake discs are warped cuz they do cause the car to shake/vibrate everytime you brake above 60kmph. But I just go gentle on the brakes when above 60kmph so i've sort of adapted to it. The shocks and bushings, well, I don't really trash it around country roads as much any more so it doesn't seem to matter much either.

My only complaint with it, apart from the brakes, would be the engine feels asthmatic at low revs and seems to have 0 torques. It just can not pull the car comfortably over inclines. Maybe I'm asking for too much from my 12yr old 1.4l engine.

My 75's in tomorrow morning for it's last NCT with me before it goes to it's new home on Saturday. Will be interesting to see how it does, I'm only going to check bulbs and align the headlights.

In fairness passing the NCT does not mean you can't replace the discs and pads anyway :)

Engine sounds fine for what it is.

You can now drive around in the confidence of knowing that if your shocks or brakes are knackered, they're equally knackered on both sides ;).

Might look into changing the discs over the summer. It could do with new break lines and good quality pads to make the brakes sharper.

But I'ld also like to save up to buy a new, bigger car next year probably so I'm not gonna go spending mad on it again.

Hopefully you're never in a situation where you gotta do a emergency stop and your car's brakes are nowhere up to scratch.Spend the money, having **** brakes isn't funny.

For the sake of 100 euros on new discs and pads ....

I had a warped disc on the front ... it was not nice at all and its only going to get worse.

If the brakes were bad they wouldn't pass the test even if there was 0% imbalance across the axle.

OP your oil consumption might be due to wear, a faulty piston ring, or perhaps a faulty valve stem oil seal/guide on the top end. Best bet is to get a simple compression test done. If the compression is good it's a top end issue.

Brakes passed the NCT so are presumably ok. The "shudder" might be down to a part worn ball joint, track road end, or even poorly balanced wheels.

I think you have a rare disease - motoring hypochondria :D

If it's 12 years old, you're only good until 2012. 10 years and older need to be NCTed every year.

Passed this morning without a bother. That's 2 NCT's she's flown through. Going to miss her when she's gone!

Mine passed recently, so ok till 2013, I still replaced the discs and pads beforehand anyway, they were below the limit by a couple of mm and brake had just started to pulse, but for 55 euro for two discs, pads and fluid, another 50 for oil/filters, cant go wrong, long may cheap motoring last (fingers crossed) only thing, wish the boot was a bit bigger. oops also 2 x tyres few months back so add 120 ish. Wouldnt skimp on replacing brakes/pads/tyres

Thats only from June, ten years an older cars will only get 1 year but until then, 2 years. Mine was due early June but you can book early by up to 3 months, what i did. 12 YO cars due up to maybe 31st Aug can technically get a 2yr NCT if you can get it in by end of May.

^thats a great price for discs and pads! Would you mind sharing where you got them from??

I got new discs on my car just last year but i think they were bad quality for why they got warped so soon.

I'm a bit tight on cash lately but if i can get good quality discs and pads for cheap, ill get them changed soon and will get new breaklines while at it too...

I'm pretty sure the shrudder is due to warped brake discs as it only happens when i press the break pedal at above 60kmph. The moment i let go of the pedal the shruddering stops and it only happens on pressing the break pedal. If i let go off the accelerator and let the car slow down without pressing the brakes its nice and smooth...

I'll look into getting a compression test done when changing the discs. Though if its piston rings, there isnt much i can do and even if its top end, ill have to buy a new rocker cover as i just cant change the gasket on my engine (i found this last year) so again cheaper just to keep topping up the oil...

If you have floating discs (i.e. the disk is just held on by the brake caliper and wheel then you should look at why they are warping, could be that the caliper is sticking and it needs to be cleaned or the wheel hub is knackered and its not sitting even in the brake caliper. Something is rubbing and generating lots of heat and warping the disc. Usually changing the disc + pads will cure the problem as your pushing the piston back into the caliper.

It was 63 Euros for a set of Bosch discs for the front on mine,

    56 euros for the Pads.

So really the total was 119 .. but thats for a bigger car, i'm assuming they'd be cheaper on something smaller

Got mine in a local supplier based in Eindhoven.

I got them in Tallaght auto parts says 54.99 for the pads(20), discs (30) and a litre of brake fluid (5). Says price includes a discount, although I ask for one, I'm happy with the price, (small car though) I priced a place, think its called westside?? in ballyfermot and they were cheap on certain items too. The same amount of brake fluid is a good bit dearer in Halfords just down the road, they also had 5W-30 marked for sale price 6.20?? Unless it was marked wrong, I was gonna ask about it but didnt want to mess them about as it was busy and I didnt have any intention of buying as i already had oil purchased, not sure why so cheap, I never got the spec off it to try and compare if it matched a Ford Spec for me.

    Cheers for the info guys!

I was looking at these brake discs and could anyone tell me whats the difference between them as to why one is so much more expensive than the other??

    Different dimensions. Be careful.

    Part No.: 104590068
    Hole Dia:108;Dia:258;H:43.4;T:22

    Part No.: 104590018
    Hole Dia:108;Dia:239.5;Dia1:63.5 Centering;H:43;T:20

edit: best bet is to take measurements from one of your existing discs.

    Right cheers got it.

The older Puma's had the smaller 239mm dia brake discs and they later upgraded that on the newer ones to 258mm dia.

I think mine are the smaller 239mm discs as mine is an old 1999 model (think they did the upgrade in 2000) hence why they feel a bit soft and wooly.

I wouldn't think the 239mm discs are responsible for that, they've probably just seen better days/decades :)
