SPAM Emails from 'EVENTMASTER.ie'

Got what I consider to be a spam email from a company calling itself EVENTMASTER.ie on Saturday. Did anyone else get it? The email referenced an upcoming running event in the Limerick area. Now I ran another running event in the Limerick area recently and I'd hate to think that that race organiser was foolish enough to pass on my personal details to EventMaster.ie, but you wouldn't know.

Have emailed back looking for an explanation.

    I f***kin hate spam emails....

Got one too, and was very annoyed. I had run a marathon in Limerick a year ago, they had kept me on their emailing list, so presume this is where it came from.

*Edit* The email addressed me by name, meaning private details were passed on, which is the annoying thing.

For you email address say its test@test.com then use test+limerickmarathon@test.com email will still get to you but you will know if they sell it on. Also you can use a nice filter on it easy on the to address or group all emails like that have "test+" in the to address. Test this out before you do it as I don't know if all email servers support this. All mine do though.

I thought that was a GMail thing with the "+", but I've used it before for potential spam lists when needing to give them email addresses.

I got it too, but reported it as phishing mail, so i don't think I'll be getting any more from that address :P

No reply back from Eventmaster to my email asking for an explanation of where they got my email address from. I'm in the unusual position in that the address they used was only set up about 6-7 weks ago and is known to only a very few people. This means that I can make a fairly good guess as to who's involved with the distribution of my details.

TBH if I got an email saying, 'Sorry, our mistake, won't happen again', I'd forget it. But if emails from a number of people and threads like this are just ignored you'd be more inclined to keep at it.

If there any official body that this can be raised with?

There's a surprising amount of people here who might be familiar with a Garmin. Did anyone get one of these spam emails who has just run a recent race without a pace band?

The Data Protection Commissioner. Check out their website to make a complaint

Don't expect any response from the spammers, they are spamming you afterall.

If your collectively able to identify the source of the email list though, which it sounds like you are, I'd be letting them know your feelings about them selling off the email address list. It's the source of the list who needs to apologise and fix the situation if possible.

Have lodged a complaint with the DPC ...let's see if that goes anywhere...

I got one also, and I didn't even run in "that race". However, I did send an e mail to their office before the race with a query.

Not sure if there is a reason we are shying away from naming the Limerick Marathon as the common denominator?

Very disappointing if it was them. I'm normally careful about opt in / out check boxes but with all of the pacer entries being batch processed maybe we were all opted in. Still not happy though and it's a shame because it sounds like a decent race and for a good cause.

    @ Mick.

Did anything ever come of your complaint? After getting a mail today I can only presume was a result of the exact same event giving out my email which I am not happy about at all
