Making The Leap....

    Hey guys,

Guess I'm just looking for some advice/insights/reassurance - and opinions on this one really!

Keeping it short, I am in my early 30s, in a full-time job, no debts, good amount of savings for someone my age, no mortgage, no dependents. In short - no commitments or responsibilities that lots of people my age would already have.

I am actively developing a business idea which is proven in other countries, and will be a new idea here in Ireland - and which I believe will be successful. I have a full-time job in an industry that hasn't been affected by the recession - but I really want my own business and to go out and do my own thing. I would rather try it, give it my all, and even not get very far (not that I think I won't get far!), than not try it out at all and wonder what could have been. The thing is - I don't believe I can really give it 100% while still staying in my current (very, very busy) job. So...I am thinking that I will take time out to work on the idea, give it my all and then worst comes to worst I try something else or go back to a job again. That said, I do believe that this one will have legs and will be popular.

Guess I'd just be interested to hear your thoughts, especially from those who may have stood in my shoes before!

Could you take extended holidays of say 6-12 months?

Forgot to mention - only started the job a short while ago - so that wouldn't really be an option! But my thinking is that perhaps the door could always be left open if I explain it's something I really want to pursue and something I feel I need to do and give a shot at.

Try to get a few sales before you leave your job, but other than that seems like a no brainer. Go for it.

Cheers Ronan - with this idea it will be a while before I make any revenue most likely, as I will need to get traction and users first, but I do feel like it is just a case of 'go for it'!

Id be inclined to agree with Ronan. Work away in your day job and develop your business over the next 6 months. I know you said it is difficult to do this but where there is a will there is a way!. However the fact that you have decent savings and no dependents makes it much easier to give up your job.

But defo go for it, as you say yourself you don't want to live to regret it.

I wouldn't go leaving my job. Maybe take a week's holidays that you were due work on it then? I know you say you don't have time to do it but I think you do.
Your over thinking the situation. You can do all your dev/research while you are working come up with a nice little business plan, get something small up and running.

Once you have something solid with solid income I would than think about venturing out to do something like what you are saying.

On the other hand if it is something like opening your own shop/restaurant thats a whole different ball game as you need obviously a lot more time/commitment to do that.

Either way work on it as much as you can either while your at work or after work/weekends than if you think your ready go for it! Sounds like you don't have to much to risk. If anything it will be a great experience !! :)

    Hey there,

Cheers - it's a web venture, and you're right that I can work on it in my spare time, and that's what I have been doing - getting stuck in to research etc in the evenings and a lot at weekends. However it shouldn't be long now until the site is good to go and this is an idea that will rely on getting the word out there - promotion/marketing is going to be crucial. I'm also starting to resent work as I know I want to do my own thing and work on this concept, getting it out there...also I would not be working on the idea at work man, come on!

    What is the idea :)

    What is the idea :)

Ok, ok - here it is
can't believe you just scrolled over this;)

I guess I will have to play it by ear, but am really open to people's thoughts here, even if it is ultimately up to me.

One thing is for sure - execution is everything and I wonder how a person does that while in a full-time job they don't particularly like at all.

Well I can tell you I work full time about 45-50 hours a week and I managed to make a couple of sites. Mainly the one in my signature. Getting roughly 200-300 visits daily :) And did it all piece by piece over 2 months.

It all depends on what it is. One thing is certain it does take a lot of effort. I don't even have the time to put ads up on my site lol.

    And I can't belive I scrolled over that!!! :D

    Do it..

I have many plans and some patients I'd like to do,
(each 1 filed away in a filing cabinet until later in life)

    I am nearly 30, married, 3 kids, mortgaged .
Will I every get to them??? Will they still be relevant when I do?? Lets hope so cos I'll be try'n them out either way...

Your setup to do it now, I would..

Thanks Tom for the post, really appreciate it! You sound like the complete inverse of me...three kids...I can't even get a date these days :D

That's pretty much the way I see it - I'm set up to go and the world is my oyster. Going into work now is a bit of a killer as I know this idea has bags of potential, especially in the current climate..
