    Hi

Just wondering is it worth splashing the extra cash for the diesel model?

Im going looking at a 1.6 petrol 2008 Mondeo Zetec with 110,000 kms on it.

    The list price is €9950.
I know the mileage is high but If I could drive it for 3 years and get something back and id be happy.
I only do about 15k miles per year so is it worth maybe an extra couple of grand and go for the diesel model?

I was looking at a cheapish 2008 diesel model but mileage was 170,000 kilometres, it was ex company car , 1 owner FSH. Is this massive mileage for a diesel? ( never owned a diesel before)?

Max budget is about 12k so not sure whether to go for a lowish mileage 1.6 petrol or high mileage diesel.

    Thanks in advance

Whilst the Mondeo petrol's are good on the juice there is no real comparision with the diesel as they beat them hands down for MPG

you have to ask yourself what mileage your gonna be doing and if it warrents paying the money for an older year diesel or one with higher mileage.Averege about another 300 mpg per full tank of fuel

Personally if I had 12G Id buy the diesel and im sure id get more than what you described for your money if you look really hard.

    Hope this helps

Does it have to be an 08? Would you not consider getting an 07 petrol instead. The 1.6 petrol is under powered for a car that size and will cost you more in the long run on fuel. I drive an 08 diesel and am getting 50mpg. The older 1.8 petrol would see you around 35mpg.

Im driving a 07 Mondeo 1.8 TDCI, just up to 94k KM. I have driven diesel for last 8 years or so but this was first Mondeo(bought about 6 months ago). Had Saab, VW Passat, Audi etc all in diesels before.

First thing about the petrol, I have seen in the Focus 1.4 and the Mondeo 1.6 the engine is too small for the car size, you end up burning juice because it is such a heavy car. My sister in law has the 1.4 Focus and it is a brutal, also has had a good few problem with engine due to lack of power, and god love you if trying to do any sort of mileage on motorway.

Now I drive a lot of miles during the year, city and motorway. In the City the diesel is not so great, at the moment the on board is telling me about 7ltr per 100km which is around 33MPG. Was spinning around Dublin all weekend. But once I get on motorway to Cork/Galway/Belfast(do at least one of these trips a week) I am running at about 60MPG with cruise control on.

One thing to note, get the Zetec, cruise-control, 6 speed gear box etc is great. My brother just got a LX model 08. None of the above and standard air-con. Also the seats I feel are like rocks.

Also try and get the hatchback version, I think it is neater, I have saloon and it is very big! plus side thou is you could fill the boot with 3 dead bodies and still have room for the shopping!!:D

100k miles on the 08, could say it is high and car price's drop dramtically once you go over the 100k miles. I know in my saab I held onto that extra 6 months till it was at 104k miles and I lost a bundle. But in terms of a diesel engine having 100k miles on it, it is nothing. Just opened up. Not sure about the Mondeo but isnt it after 100k miles you need to change the chain on it?

A little 1.6 (especially a little 1.6 with only 110 bhp) non turbo petrol in a car the size of a Mondeo wouldn't pull the skin off a rice pudding.

A woefully underpowered engine like that will spoil what is otherwise an excellent car.

Get the diesel if you value being able to travel at greater than walking pace!

    Thanks for all the replies.
I think I have my mind made up that I'll get a diesel. But with only 12k to spend on a 2008 I will have to get one with fairly big mileage.
    I'll have a look around

I'd go for a year older and lower mileage if I were you. Unless you find a very well looked after high miler with a fresh clutch/flywheel/particle filter.

1.6 litre petrol and 1.8 litre diesel are the runt of the litter in the Mondeo range. The 1.6 litre petrol is gutless and drinks like a fish, the 1.8 litre is an old unit and has a narrow power band, the only advantage of it is that it doesn't have a DPF fitted.

If it were me I would try and find a 2.0 litre TDCi version, much more refined cruiser.
