Internal jobs and notice period

I work for a large organisation with very distinct areas. I have applied for an internal job - internal to the organisation but in a different building department etc. I am concerned since it is a maternity contract if I get it they may want me to start asap, but there is a months notice required for my job. They should know this as it is a policy across the organisation that all positions required 1 month. Do you think as it is internal there may be ways to get around this? I ask as my current area is very short staffed so my boss would never agree to let me go early

Chances are slim that you would get the position simply because your area is currently short staffed; one of the first things done in most organizations is asking your current manager if they can let you go or not. Based on what you said the chances are slim that your manager would say yes...

So you think I won't get it because my area is short staffed?? But that means I could never move or be promoted simply because i am doing this job. I have applied for it the same way as anyone else - internal or external. I figured the best candidate would get it but if that was me then I would face the problem of when to start.

Your company should have an internal transfer policy and any internal transfers would be goverened by this policy.

They don't appear to. They have a resignation policy that specifically states moving from one position to another is not a resignation and thus no official resignation letter etc is required.... but I don't know if the notice periods etc are still required.

Edt - sure I'm getting ahead of myself here - I can worry about this if I get offered it I suppose! I just wanted to be prepared for the question regarding my availablility

If you get the job it will be up to the two managers to sort out a release date and start date, not for you to worry about. That's the way it works in all the organisatiosn I have been invoved with up to now anyway.

I agree, I've been through this a few times and it always worked this way.

Assuming that you have a good record with the company, I'm sure that they'd prefer to see you in another role with them rather than loose you - so the fact that your current team is under staffed etc.. should not be an issue.
