Hitachi dash 5 are a great digger, komatsu dash 6 are a great digger also, either of which i would go for, drove a dash 6 komatsu for 3 years and was completely trouble free !

I would be looking for a Hitachi if you are going for a machine of that era. As Ford4000 said Komatsu are OK but if you buy one that was abused and not maintained properly it will break your heart and pocket..

I have a gra for Kobelco's. They are a nice balanced machine with good digging power and have nice comfortable cabs and good visability. Also the fact that most of them have control changers on them is useful for me - I learned with Mitsubishi controls so its great to be able to just twist the lever to change from the universal controls to the Mitsubishi ones.

Kobelcos are scarce enough in the country at the moment - after the boom, a lot of them were bought up by buyers in Easter Europe because they could be got cheaper than a hitachi or komatsu. There's still a few around if you search in the right places.

If you buy a Komatsu and have to put parts into it, you'll be robbed.

What are Hitachi like parts-wise and service wise?

Hitachi are pretty much trouble free apart from the normal maintenance. Especially the -5s.

I'm thinking of buying a track machine. What kind of proof of ownership goes with a track machine? Do they have log books the same as cars & tractors?
