There was a run on today up from Kanturk, i wasnt on it, but i gatecrashed the stopover after a tip off from a fellow jap enthusiast. Well worth the trip. Apologies for the over exposed photos, they were taken on the phone.

You wait 15 years to see a MK1 Cressida and two come along at once...

I learnt to drive in a silver TA40 Carina, still remember doing a full 360' on the Stillorgan dual carriageway after hitting what must have been a black sack full of banana skins.

Lovely shots. That 2nd generation Carina was quite short lived around 83/84 if I recall. Until the Carina II came along circa 1985, and they along with those starlets were just everywhere in Ireland. The era when Toyota really took off here.

Their model development cycles were very short in many cases, certainly compared to the European manufacturers. It was the same with Datsun/nissan who were very prolific in developing new models, and filling niches in the market. E.g. the Stanza, or the Prairie

This is where things get complicated:

The Corona T150 - which is what we got as the first "Carina II" - was launched in 1983 in Japan and 1984 in Europe.

The Carina T150 was launched in May 1984 in Japan - it started sharing the same FWD platform as the Corona, but with a sportier, more angular body like this:
    500px-Toyota_carina_st162.jpg

However, the sports models - the 1600GT, 1600GT-R, 1800GT-T and 1800GT-TR were continued on the A60 platform (RWD) until August 1985 when the FWD T160 Carinas replaced them - I'm not sure why exaclty these sports models got a different chassis number than the T150s, they look the same but there must be something significantly different about them (suspension or something?).

The A60 non-sports saloons, estate and van were actually in production until 1988, despite the T150/T160 replacements - I guess either Toyota or the customers were reluctant to let go of their last compact RWD car platform.

    Also, regarding the chassis numbers:
The first letter designates the engine model, so in the case of that Carina, it's an AA63, not a TA60. The numbers change a bit between engines too, it's not always easy to find out but the ones ending in 0 are usually the base models - e.g. with P60 Starlets (I think):
    KP60 - 1.0 2K engine
    KP61 - 1.2 3K engine
    KP62 - 1.3 4K engine

Or E90 Corollas ('87-'92, not doing the Jap ones):
    EE90 - 1.3 2E carb
    AE92 - 1.6 4A-F/4A-FE/4A-GE
    CE90 - 1.8 1C-III diesel

Since that Starlet now has an 4AGE maybe it should be like an AP63 :D
