Passive or powered? At that price Im assuming passive. How many channels do you need? What other gear do you have as it is all interrelated.

Im going to recommend a Yamaha MG166C or a Peavey 14usb or 20usb for now until I get more info. Both erasonable desks for that money. You dont need to go for the USB version but its handy for recording a mix.

How many channels do you need? Have you any other equipment like gates, eq's, comps or effects?

the only other equipment i have is the speakers that came with my old pa, which are as good as new so will do the trick. ideally would like something with 16 channels or more

So you need a powered desk? Or are the speakers powered?

What is the rating on the speakers? Need the phm and watt rating. Also we still need to know how many channels you need? How many mics will you be using and are you using keys or using and DIs?

To be honest in a powered desk there will not be much in that price range but let us know these details and we might be able to find something.

Maybe the yamaha emx series? But we might be able to reccomend something better if we know these details.

said it in the post above looking for something with 16 channels, 3 vocal mics are used, no di boxes are used. frm time to time there will be need to mic up amps, the speakers are 500 watts altogether. is it possible to get a powered version of the yamaha mg166 cx?

Sorry I missed the part about the 16 channels.

Well you could use the MG166 cx and combine it with an external amp but you will be adding more cost to it. FInishing off an assignment at the moment but Ill have a lok at stuff when Im finished later tonight.

The EMX range would be the closest yamaha do to an active MG166 but it is probably overpowered and overpriced for those speakers. Most of what I am familiar with would be more expensive. The only thing I can think of at the moment is a deceent desk like the yamaha and then a cheap behringer amp. The behrineger stuff is a bit hit and miss at time and I have some reservations about it but I do have a few of their pedals which are decent enough. They havent got a great reputation for the most part and are generally considered a beginner/entry level brand. If you were to increase the budget you might get something a bit better but for now that is what I would reccomend. For a little bit more you could get a Peavey IPR which would be better quality and they are lighter than a video player so handy for bringing to gigs.

For good quality gigging system for a rock band that you can rely on I would generally spend at least 2000 for everything including speakers but I know it is not realistic for everyone to have that budget.

Where bouts are you based? It might be worth dropping into a shop with a good PA section so you can see the difference in the gear and quality if you can.
