Anyone have any details on the above. Apparently you can order a right hand drive car from a main dealer in Belguim with signficnant savings. You can then drive the car home, the system in Belguim is that you are allowed 2 weeks from date of taking possession of car before registration.

You then pay your taxes in this country but you still save a lot of money compared to the price of a new similar model in this country.

    Anyone any details / knowledge

I wouldn't count on it. You will have to do your sums. What car is it exactly, what extras, can you buy it ex-VAT in Belgium, how much will it cost to get it to Ireland? Answer those questions and I'm sure someone on here will tell you how much the same car would be from an Irish dealer :)

If he's not buying it with an invoice for vat registered company, then he'll have to pay vat in Belgium.
Then while registering it in Ireland he will have to pay vat in Ireland.
But with receipt of paying vat in Ireland, he can claim vat paid in Belgium back.

Cost of getting it to Ireland would be probably just to flight to Belgium + petrol and ferries to Ireland + temporary registration and insurance (which wouldn't be more than 100 euros).

I'm not trying to establish a deabate about the merits or otherwise of importing a new car from Belguim, rather I am trying to establish if anyone has any experience or knowledge of this. I recall a similar post on askaboutmoney.com circa 5 years ago and I can't source this post on askaboutmoney, therefore I have posted here

    Thanks

    You don't really need experience.
You just need to check apropriate regulations and do calculation if it's worth it.

As the others have said, you'll have to do the calculations for your particular car. Don't get fixated on Belgium either, you'll need to find out what country has the lowest pre-tax price for the car you want.

I cant see Belgium being any cheaper to buy in. The only man that can answer your question is Keithclancy. Drop him a PM maybe but he is normally around here..

Things are different to how they were 5 years ago. UK imports meant that many distributors dropped their prices and upped spec.

What car are you looking at?

Think you'd end up paying more to be honest.

Its 62 euros for Transit plates.
Say 300 euros for your Transport over and back.

And lots of hassle dealing with Belgian Civil Servants.

Saying that, Belgium is popular enough for second hand cars. Never heard of anyone buying a new car from Belgium, even here in Holland it works out around the same when you have to pay the registration taxes.

    Heres some info.
