Nothing is official, but the internal thought with WWE is that The Undertaker is basically retired, which explains Michelle McCool’s departure to stay at home with him.
According to Wrestling Observer Newsletter, physically Undertaker is in far worse shape than is being let on.
The company is not ruling out him wrestling next year at Wrestlemania, however, they are not expecting him to work another match before then.

His friends have talked to him about winning again at Wrestlemania 28, and retiring with a 20-0 Mania streak.
This is sad. I've not been a wrestling fan for years now but when I was Taker was my favourite by far and now and again I would watch some of his old matches and keep up to date with what he was doing.

Cheers for the awesomeness for all those years deadman.

meltzer has been writing off taker for 10+ years now, he will eventually get it right one of these days

takers on a good number, he is bringing in $2m+ a year for working the schedule he works, he won't give that up.........yet, i expect him to be back before end of the year

He'll surely come back for WM28 to make it 20-0. We probably won't see him until around Royal Rumble though, The Deadman is pushing on in years now so next year he's definitely gone for good, I'd say. Legend.

Taker has been 'retired' for the last 2 or 3 years. ;)

Yes only Dave Meltzer has, right?

Mike Johnson reported that when Undertaker had shoulder surgery in January when the doctors opened him up his shoulder was ten times worse then previously believed.

He's a bit of a medical marvel tbh. I'd say if you assessed his combined injuries and the damage that 20+ years of high profile wrestling has done to his joints, he probably has the bidy of a man twice his age.

Not too surprised by this info to be honest (if it turns out to be true). To me, the deterioration in his physical condition in the last 18 months has been huge. Compare what he was able to do against HBK at WM26 to the spot fest against HHH at WM27. It just seemed to me that he wasn't able to get up quickly after taking moves (although he nearly killed himself with that dive over the top rope).

Wouldn't be a big fan of him continuing his streak with annual appearances beyond next year. What's the point if we know he's going to win? I doubt he'll be able to churn out classics every year in his one match of the year. Wouldn't mind seeing him return to beat Cena at WM30 though.

If his body is capable of it and as long as he doesn't do himself any long-term harm, then I think it would be better to finish on 20-0 than 19-0. Sounds like he's got a few injuries but surely about 9 or 10 months rest would clear some of them up?

I mean he's off now, he could pop-up in February and set-up the match and even then, he only has to come on TV and cut a promo and won't have to do any in-ring work until the actual match in April. Perhaps I'm naive and I don't realise how badly he is injured, but I'm just thinking that all that time off he will have now is bound to help?

    I can see it now..
    A log cabin, rain, a black boot;
    2-21-12!

Kinda glad he's giving retirement a thought cause there is nothing as bad as staying too long.20-0 sounds about right wwe should give him the choice of who he wants to go out wrestling with.I'd love to see him against Kurt Angle but that ain't likely so i'd settle for Jericho,HHH or someone else thats genuinely capable of having a amazing match with him.

He really looked terrible after his match at this year's WM it is probably best he retires now - always will be a legend

I wish the stupid WWE writers on SD would acknowledge and mention his retirement if he is or why is not on the show on a weekly basis

Dream scenario: Punk is pushed to the moon until next March setting up a Taker/Punk 30 minute classic.

Reality: Rematch with HHH. Although this years was a classic, I'm not sure there's any point having another.

Then there is The Man They Call Sting....

Would he come to lose though?

Agreed on Punk, he's my ideal choice for next year.

If it's punk next year, I could see him winning. He would be the perfect candidate to be pushed to high heaven for it.

They could take repay him with big wins in the following months. 10 years too late for Sting and the WWE, but I'd still like to see what they could do with him.

Id love to see Sting vs Taker, or just Sting in the WWE full stop. 52 years old and performs like a man 20 yrs younger ffs! He might be tempted by a big enough offer (financial and storyline) to give it a year or two.

Sting's issues with the WWE are pretty longstanding at this stage though. Not that wrestling hasn't seen similar about turns in the past.

Whats his issue with WWE? old WCW talent not being used properly or something?

Yeah that is one of his issues. The others were a dislike of Vince McMahon and the general WWE product. Now that they are PG, that should ease his concerns, but I doubt he has changed his tune that much.

But he is on record as saying he didn't like how other WCW talent was used. Goldberg probably made his mind up for him.

Yeah Vince hadnt the slightest clue how to use Goldberg really. Rey and Booker T are prob the only guys that were/are being used by WWE to any decent extent.

The PG thing is interesting though, was Sting not a fan of the way WWE pretty much overused bleeding and the hardcore match?

sting is nearly as bad as Taker, he's barely had a singles match since he won the TNA title, most of them are tag matches where he has little involvement, or triple threats where he gets taken out early and spends alot of the match lying down near the apron
