    Heya,

I have a small problem here that I just remembered.

As I mentioned I just got a new job and will start on the 16th. No problem there and very happy BUT....I got reminded today, that I have a holiday booked with my family at the end of September, 2 weeks in Egypt. Of course I would love to go on that vacation but in worst case I can always cancel it. I will only have worked for my company for roughly 5 months (bit less) and I wonder if I should even ask. It makes me uneasy but if it's necessary I would cancel it...what to do?

Your contract (if you have got it yet) will state how your holidays work however in any event notify them about your holidays immediately. It is not necessary to cancel it. Explain that you already booked the holiday before you got the job if necessary.

After 5 months you will have worked up the 10 days of holiday time so once you let them know immediately they shouldn't have any issue with it.

No problem at all, just tell them on your first week so they know

Or call them now and maybe send a followup email to your manager/HR contact just to be sure

    Don't cancel

I start my new job in July but have to take a couple of days off a week after starting and fly home for my brother's wedding. I emailed HR and they were great about it. I reckon once you give them enough notice you should be fine

Some employers can be incredibly unflexible about holiday time. Some make you take your holidays in week long blocks, and that the year is cut in half and that you must take half your holidays at one end of the year and the other half on the other. I think people here are giving you a rosy view, in all likelihood you will have to cancel your holiday or at least scale it back to a week.

BTW; WFT? Egypt? Do you want to get sucked into a revolution?

Thanks for all the answers. I'll just talk to them when I start and see what they say.
I am a bit worried they'll think I held it back on purpose as that topic didn't even come up on the interview (though I did mention that I have gone on vacation with my family every year since I was small). I was focusing so much on getting the position that it simply slipped my mind =/

@Denerick: Of course not but we are hoping that things will have calmed down by then. If not we'll see.

I had a two week holiday booked last Sept and started a job at the start of June, so pretty similar to you. I just told them on the first day when I had a meeting with the manager and they were fine about it.

It was never an issue in my old job either and isn't in my current one. I work in a finance-y job so maybe it's different in different sectors but I don't think you'd have an issue.

Also, I believe Sharm escaped any riots, uprising, violence etc so you should be fine. I went there a few years ago, great place! :)

It would be an unreasonable employer who would prevent you from going IMO

Thanks again for the replies, actually feeling a bit calmer about the whole issue now. If they don't agree I'll cancel...just hoping it will work out at it will probably be the first time I see my parents since Christmas

I would be surprised if you were forced to cancel - just let your employer know in good time.
A tad Off Topic but I agree that Egypt is not a safe place to visit at the moment.

It's also slightly off-peak so staff in your company with families etc are likely to be taking their annual leave in June/July/August -also, working 5 months in a row- any good employer will be delighted with you as you have a long un-interrupted length of time to get to grips with the role and potentially covering for other staff taking their leave-

    Time will tell :)

    Hey, just as an update.

All is well. I asked if I could take the time off in september and will be allowed to go on the planned vacation <3
Loving my new employer ^_^ (and job is great in general)
