Second hand steel rims

    Hi folks,
I was looking at second hand steel rims (16", five stud rims for a mk3 Mondeo) in a dismantlers today. He was looking for €30 a rim which seems reasonable to me. The rim of "the rims" looked ok, i.e. not bent and beaten back into shape.

There was some very minor surface rust. Would sanding back to bare metal and some Hammerite be a suitable fix?

The rims generally had 30-40g of balancing "lead". Is this a lot? Will be getting the wheels professionally fitted anyway.

The main thing that struck me is that although the rims have the outer valve housing there's no actual valve inside. Is this something a tyre fitters can easily fit and how much might I expect to pay (on top of fitting the tyre).

Yes of course all up to yourself and how your want it to look. A Satin/Matt finish looks good on steels IMO.

Not really, most steel rims take about that. I've had alloys take 110g of weight.

Tyre fitters will fit that when fitting the tyre. Better off changing new valves for new tyres. you could always pop into your local factors and ask for 4 new valves. should be no more than €10 for the 4. Could be €1 each. And give them to the tyre fitter. Just to be sure.

The weights are added when there's a tyre fitted. Some fitters are lazy and don't match the valve mark to the valve cap, they just balance it out. Some of the cheaper tyres aren't balanced well either, so need a lot of weight. I've never looked at how much weight is on my wheels, they're either balanced or not.

I got new valves when getting the bike tyres done for €2 each. Most times for the car they've been free with 4 tyres. It's advised to always fit a new valve with new tyres.

I had to get one last week for my mk3 mondeo and was thinking about 2nd hand from scrapyard as all the main dealers wanted 80 euro for a new one . I tried fort motors last and they only wanted 55 euro including valve, the scrappers wanted 30 so i just paid the extra 25 for a new one.

    Where are they?

I'm in Cork and the cheapest from a dealer was (I think) €75/rim. If it was just one rim I'd buy new but as I need a set of four I can't justify the extra €180.

They're in walkinstown in dublin. Maybe call up fort motors and get the price from them and the go back to the main dealers in cork. Prob wont change price but worth a try

So, anyhow I got the rims a while back. For the four rims it cost €120 plus another €50 in paint and supplies (wire brush and wet & dry sandpaper). Guess it took me maybe 2 hours in total (spread over a few evenings) to clean and paint the rims.

So in total it cost me €170 plus two hours labour versus €220 for new rims according to illegalpower. For me it was worth it, not so much because I saved €50 (which was nice) but more because I enjoyed the project.
