I've had my camera 3 years, it's a basic Kodak C913, and when I hit the on button, it turns on and the lens extends...and then the lens retracts and the camera switches off again. I've tried new batteries with no luck!

    Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

More than likely it's just a ghost. Have you tried sprinkling holy water on it? Not too much now, you don't want it to get water damaged.

Pesky ghosts trying to make people think their cameras are broken

Normally with P&S's the cause of that fault can be a few things resulting from impact or simple wear and tear but it usually comes down to:

Jammed lens barrel or gear preventing full extension->retracting and shutting off or and error.
A switch, sensor or contact strip & brush that detects the position of the lens that has failed resulting in the camera retracting the lens and shutting off to protects the gears and motor from stripping/burning out.

The repair would involve replacing the lens assembly which is actually pretty cheap (but is used). IF you are handy with electronics and are confident enough to open it up carefully (soldering is required) then it would be worth fixing but otherwise if brought to someone for repairs it would probably cost a little less/more than a new one depending on the time it would take.
If you aren't handy with repairs You could sell it on Ebay and offset the price of a new camera.

    Hope this helps.

Other than that I do repairs so if you are interested in having it repaired PM me and Ill see what I can do to help.
