Hello I am looking for advice on buying a laptop.

I am looking to buy a new laptop, a powerful one. With over 2 gigs of ram. A powerful processor more than dual core processor and also it would need a firewire port.

An mac book pro is not an option due to the price. But I would be looking for similar specs to it, but without the outrageous price tag.

    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    Hey !

Just had a quick look around and cant find any laptops that are cheap and natively support FireWire.

Something like the Sony Vaios would be your best bet IMO, they've got 380M Dual core processors (with hyper threading so you get a boost in performance in programs that support it, which is most programs) 3GB of RAM (could be cheaply upgraded to 8GB) and an expresscard slot which you could buy a firewire card for.

and a link for a Expresscard too

    Hi,
If this is of any help, I got a 17' Dell Vostro last year for about 800. I do a lot of Photoshop etc for college so needed something powerful. As with yourself, a Macbook Pro was beyond financial constraints, but a friend installed Snow Leopard so now it's pretty much a Mac in a different box (without the bells and whistles). The spec is the same as a Macbook Pro was at the time (2.53 Core Duo, 4gb ram AND FIREWIRE), only half the price. I'm also about to stick Pro Tools on it as this machine whips my ageing pc desktop and here the firewire comes into play. For my next purchase I'll get the real deal, but this filled a gap and perhaps a 'Hackintosh' might be a consideration for you...

Why the need for Firewire? You'll get USB 3 on alot of Laptops now.

    How ya lads,
All these replies are much appreciated.

Deano I had a look at that Sony, doesnt look to bad, I'd consider it. Thanks.

A1000, cheers I've actually considered wiping my whole computer before. But at this stage I've had it now for 3 years so I think its time for a new one.

Hal I have an m-audio project mix it has a fire wire port on it, so would either need a fire wire port or an express card slot. I'm not familiar with usb 3, can you give me some information about it?

I have been looking into buying a computer from abroad America or even asia. Does anyone know about power supplies if I buy one for example from America. I know there is different voltages. Is it as simple as just changing the charger...I dont think it is. Dose it depend on the computer??

m-audio project mix, had to look that up. Ok, there's no USB3 port on the m-audio so it won't do for this and I thought it was just a faster transfer speed you were after. Firewire seems best suited for what you need alright.

    Buying from America threads.
