Backing Tracks and MIDIs

Hi all, I am a one man act performing Irish country and ballads.
I've been at it about a year now on my own.
I have about 50 midi files. I've been playing them off my laptop and it sounds pretty poor to be honest.
Recently I've used some software called SynthFont to translate them into wav files. Some of the wavs came out very well and some turned out to sound crap.

I'm told the best option is to play the midi's on a keyboard/synthesiser? OR record off of a keyboard/synthesiser to wav and then they should be good for the laptop/ipod.

Does anyone know of any services around for recording my midis to WAV via a professional high quality keyboard?

I look forward to some feedback from people :) I hope!

    Dwain

Well if you're playing a MIDI file through a laptop, you're running your own sound generators, right? If you played your MIDI files into someone else's gear you'd have to find your sounds all over again on their equipment.

To make it sound good will take a while, esp if you're trying to use things like synth guitar, which typically will always sound crap, where as stuff like piano, drums and even brass and strings can be pretty ok.

Send me a DM and we can chat about this;I may be able to help.

    Hi Dwain

You've bought some midi backing tracks from me in the past. A lot of my customers use - and swear by - the Ketron Midjay:

It's small and inconspicuous, but very versatile and apparently comes with great instrument sounds/samples.

Other than that, for converting to MIDI to WAV, I think the soundfont approach is fine - as long as you get a good one. However, if you want more control and quality, I would really recommend a good all round VST sampler like Hypersonic.

If you want to discuss your options further, send me a PM anytime or get in touch with me through my backing tracks website.

    J.

I use Cubase SX3 VST multitrack studio with SampleTank and various other VST instruments/modules (Great bit of kit!) to mix, record & produce my backing.

Throw in some real decent VST FX modules - exciters, bass expanders, stereo expanders etc.. and with a bit of time and effort and decent mixing the results are great.

Then just export the tracks to WAV or MP3. Simples !
(I started off doing my backing tracks years ago using a Roland PR-100 and £100 yamaha mini keyboard from Toys-R-Us with AWM sample sounds - made me thousands with all the gigs I used them for haha)

With imagination, creativity and sheer bloody hard work - anything's possible !
    Good luck with it :)
