Buying a small van

    Hi,

My father is planning to buying a van for doing handy man work. We know very little about what would be the best type of van to buy. Ideally he is looking for something small 1.9 litre engine max.

After a bit of checking these 4 seem to be the names that are cropping up most often -

    Fiat Doblo
    Peugeot Partner
    VW Caddy
    Citroen Berlingo

Has any one had any good or bad experiences with the above? Or are there other oprions that are worth looking at?

    Any advice much appreciated.

    Sean

All those are pretty much the same size, I 'd say on fuel consumption the Caddy would be best but all 4 will have good mpg. It might be worth him going for a larger van like a Toyota Hiace if he intends to be carrying large ladders or needs extra cargo space, would probably pick up a Hiace cheaper than those you have mentioned. Of those above I would go with the Caddy.

Bear in mind from an engine point of view there's no difference in road tax
on a van, could be 1.4 or 2.5, same price.

Have a look at the Opel/Vauxhall Combo 1.3 diesel, had a loan of one there for a few weeks around Christmas and found it great, light on diesel and nippy enough once it isn't loaded down with stuff.

You could also add the Ford transit connect to your list.
I'd go for the Caddy myself, but you do pay a premium for them.

FYI, if you move to a 'smart' meter electricity plan, you CAN'T move back to a non-smart plan.

You don't have to take a 'smart' meter if you don't want one, opt-out is available.

Buy drinks in 3L or bigger plastic bottles or glass bottles or cartons to avoid the DRS fee.

Although a nice van they can give awful trouble so best get someone who knows what they are looking at if interested in one;)

The others on the OPs list are far from bomb proof either. Irrespecive of which van the op is looking at it should be checked over by a mechanic before parting with money.
