Android n00b Questions

    Hi Folks,

Just got a Galaxy S there yesterday and so far I'm pretty impressed. I was wondering if anyone here could direct toward an Android centred website for help and for installing custom ROM's.

Also I was wondering if anyone here has managed to get Samsung Kies to work with Ubuntu. I am running Ubuntu as my main OS and from what I've gathered from googling it seems that Kies cannot run in Wine and running a WinXP VM is out as apparently the virtual USB causes problems. Is there another workaround or is Kies an absolute necessity (if it is then I will have to do a dual boot for it)

    Dave

    http://forum.xda-developers.com/
Find your phone and go into Android development, and it'll show you all the custom ROMs.

XDA is the best site there is for android tbh. You be surprised how untechie the whole process is once you start doing it.

Other than to update to the official firmware there is no real need for Kies. Its a terrible terrible software.

There are a few very simple ways to transfer files to your phone over wi-fi, Dropbox is one, create a phone shared folder and get the Dropbox Android app (doesn't auto download).
Swiftp and Filezilla is the other (for bigger files)
