Saved up around €5k and stuck it in the cautiously managed fund to help fund a postgrad, though its not really performing, only have it around a year and a half, any thoughts?

Theres a low opinion of managed funds around here, have a flick back through the last 2 or 3 pages of this forum and theres a number of threads talking about them.

Irrespective of how the fund is managed, the most important thing to consider is the time scale involved - if you will need the cash with the next say 4 years, then a cash deposit of some kind would be a more appropriate.

When investing it is important that time is on your side, you should be in a position to ride out any down turn in the markets without being under pressure to sell because you need the cash.

That of course is not to say that the fund will not do well in the coming few years, but it does mean that you are taking on a higher risk of loosing your cash than you might want to do in the short term.

    Jim.

    Thanks for your reply

I will prob need to cash out by october im afraid, heres my future requirements:

    SEP/OCT Onwards:
    Uni fees €7500
    Accomodation €5,000
    Living expenses (Dublin) €4,000

Assuming my part time work gains 3-4K by that time, and i cash out at 5,000
do you guys have any suggestions how id finance the fees? Was thinking of a zero percent overdraft from aib (1500) and a credit union loan for the rest?
