ACCA for dummies?

Is there such a thing? Ive been working in Dublin now for the last year and seeing as work are willing to pay for them I figure I might as well give them a bash but I havn't a clue where to start.
I am exempt from all the fundamentals except for F8 so I have to do that one and all the professional ones.
Just a few questions. Is it possible to study from home for them all and if so which revision notes should I go for (Kaplan or BPP or is there much of a difference)? Id imagine the professional ones would be near impossible to study from home so can anyone recommend any colleges around stephens green?
Also can anyone tell me what order might be best to do them in? Im hoping to do 2 exams at xmas (F8 and either P1or P3) and then P2 the following june followed by the remaining 3 the next xmas (or maybe spread them out more)
Is there any of the optional ones to avoid? Some easier than others kind of thing?
Also I understand when to qualify you have to be working 3 years? What does this 3 years actually involve? can it be backdated? I mean Ive been working in Finance/accounting for the last year and a half, can that be counted or is it only from the 3 years when I sign up with ACCA?

Loads of questions and great confusion so any help appreciated!!

    Thanks!!
