Is there any way on the ipad to open a new tab but stay on the current tab?

If you hold the button down it gives you the option to "open in new page" which keeps the page you are currently on rather than navigating away from it? Is that what you are looking for?

Hold your finger on the link you want to open in a new tab. You'll get a pop up to choose.

Or the symbol in the bottom lower right of the Safari to swap / open a new tab.

Just hold down on the link as others said and there will be an option to open in a new page

Thanks for the replies. I know about the hold down the link for open in new page. What I am wondering is there a way to open the new page but stay on the original page like you can do on the desktop version of any browser? Ironclaw what is the symbol at the bottom right hand corner of the ipad browser cant seem to find it?

Have them both. Terra is new and for the time being free, so worth downloading it.
Atomic is not free, but there is a good lite version. I bought the full version and I am very happy with it.

Have to say been using terra all day today and its excellent. The ability to open tabs in the background just makes browsing so much quicker. Its very odd that safari doesn't have this very basic functionality. Terra also doest seem to be any slower then safari either. Does anyone know what is meant to be the fastest free safari browser?

Icabmobile beats them all IMO. Superb browser.

icab is good for having a way of setting your browser ID so sites don't display annoying "optimised" ios web interface.
