Britain's final hour?

It was announced today that the Scottish Parliament is to hold a referendum on their future within the United Kingdom. What will happen if they succeed? Sinn Fein are making considerable gains in the Assembly elections and their proposal for a United Ireland referendum is likely to succeed. And of course not to mention Irish militant republicans who are assorting to arms to assert their right to self determination. Are we witnessing the final saga of the United Kingdom? Could this be Britain's final hour?

THey still do not dominate Scotland's selection of Westminister MP seats. So its hard to say that they would win.

As for the North, if Scotland went, you hardly underestimate the Unionist and Loyalists beating up the drums, dusting down the guns, even getting Paisley out of retirement?

Sinn Fein wants a referendum yet has not publicly specified what kind of ireland it is to be, seat of power, judiciary etc. Never mind trying to get the trust of the north. People in the north have a right to self determine via their government in Stormount. Dublin takes no particular like to groups like the RIRA professing that they represent all of us in Ireland.

Hey be great if it all works, but lets not get naive.

    Was it?

    Was it?
Within the next five years. Of course whether or not such a referendum would succeed (AFAIK current support for independence is currently around 30%) is another matter entirely

But then a SNP majority government in Scotland is still a small step towards Scottish independence. And I find it very difficult to see just how you can have a United Kingdom without Scotland
