In some eastern European countries I'm pretty sure they did come with the 1.6. Over here I've only ever heard they were 1.9's.

Is it possible there was a screw up during registering the car? There is a crossover period between the e36 & e46 at 99' so one never knows.

They only came with a 1.9 originally and the a 1.8, other than the obvious larger engines.

They stopped using the 1.6 on the older model, that said it could be an old engine.

They were all 1.9s minimum, well at least from the factory they were anyway.

Anyway, a 316i is one of the most pointless cars in existance. Not sure why you'd be interested in the worst possible engine for it, especially as you're paying 1.9 tax for an engine with 1.6 power:confused:?

Looks like the car is out of tax, oh and the car is total poverty spec (even for a 99 reg Paddy spec 3 series) as well.

Says in the advert that the engine was replaced.

OP, it seems like it had a 1.6 litre engine fitted from the E36 at a guess as the E46 316i had a 1.9 litre engine that had the performance of a 1.6 litre. Maybe a cartell report will have more history on this? Sure at least you will be getting your money's worth tax wise.

If you are stuck with 1.6 litre then maybe you should look at a similar year Audi A4. Their is a better choice around of them in 1.6 litre.

Could be Compact engine I guess. Bound to be a bit breathless, e46 was a heavy car. Well off shopping with her for weekend I suppose, at least it's not for clothes!!!

E46 Compact didn't have a 1.6 litre engine either. 1.6 litre petrol engines only appeared in the E36 and for a short time in the E90.

There's a thought! E90 1.6  Anyone know what are they like?

They were a very rare beast but there were some 1600cc e46's around, a friend of mine had a 99 for a few years. Cant remember if it was a ROI car or one that he imported from the UK but for certain it didnt come from any where else. And the engine was original to the car as far as i recall.

How is he paying tax at a 1.9 rate? The tax disc clearly says 1596cc and €445 yearly tax rate

Probably gonna get shot for this but an early e46 isn't a whole lot newer than an e36.
An 03-04 1.8 Avensis would be cheap and well specced, maybe a Mazda6?

why would you even consider a 1.6 e46... the 318 witht he 1.9 was shockingly bad, way underpowered to be considered a good car... a 1.6 would be useless.... just why

Some people aren't in a rush.

Car year snobbery aside, an e36 is still a better car than the bottom of the pile E46s. I'd just fix up the E36 rather than waste money on something that's actually worse apart from being slightly newer
