10 k Diesel Car

I'm looking for a bit of a push in the right direction towards a good diesel car.

    I cover between 300 and 500 miles a week.

I've got a budget of in and around 10k including trade in but would be willing to move up a bit if its worth it.

I'm looking for a good powerful car with relatively high spec. No more than 2L mainly because of the tax.

I've got a 03 1.6 Petrol Golf to trade in which I'd be hoping to get about 3.5k for.

    I was looking at a few Passats 07/08. I don't fancy an A4.

    Anyone got any suggestions?

Passats from that vintage are dreadful for reliability - the 2.0 TDI PD is no match for the venerable 1.9. The newer CR 2.0 TDIs are much better though, but are more expensive. The B6 Passat is not terribly well made and is prone to electrical glitches, including the electric parking brake:rolleyes:.

They're nice and I'm surprised they're that cheap but they seem like a car that a middle aged fella would drive. No offence to middle aged fellas intended.

A Passat is far more middle-of-the-road, middle-aged, middle-Ireland than a nicely speced 9-3 which would be a small exec sporty saloon to the family/rep-man Passat. If you're leaning towards the Passat I actually thing you're looking for something pretty conservative.

Strange, I would think that you could not get more middle aged than the Passat.

Maybe I've got strange taste but I prefer the pre 08 model of the Mondeo.

What are they like for reliability. I've never driven one.

The Mk4 model is much nicer inside than the Mk3 - get the 2.0 TDCi if you can.

The Mondeo is a much nicer car IMHO than a Passat - it's also far more reliable - thinks like oil pump failure, electric parking brake failure, EPC and other expensive electrical faults that plague the Passat do not affect the Mondeo.

Also consider the Opel Insignia and the Skoda Superb - the Superb does everything the Passat does but has more space, more gadgets, feels more upmarket and costs less:)! It's more reliable too as it has a proper manual handbrake.
