I was quoted 80 per door which i think is a bit steep in 2011.

Was that just to hang the door,or does it include fitting locks and handles?

As the man says you pay peanuts you get monkeys!

That was for door locks, handles & arch.

I would be interested in how long it takes. If some one could hang 10 doors in 2 days should they really be getting €800 for it.

Well they have learned there trade, bought expensive tools and then you have to take 21 percent vat off that price.

There may be a recession on but a good tradesman will cost a bit more, but its a job done for life.Im sure you will have no problem getting someone to do it cheaper for cash, but dont expect much comeback when he makes a balls of your lovely new doors.

Just to hang the doors will take your tradesman one day (8hrs)if he does it properly. To bore out the locks, fit the locks and handles will take him a little less unless they are solid oak in which case allow one day again.
Architrave to 10 doors will take from 4 to 6 hours.
Total time there is 20 to 22 hours.
    Say 22 hrs x €22/ hour = €484.00 plus vat @ 13.5% = €549.34
Thus 54.93 per door would be appropriate.
Frames take slightly longer to make up and fit than doors do to hang, so a rate of about 20 to 22 euro per frame would be right.
€22 per hour is not great money but its fair for an individual tradesman in todays world.

Just for reference, I run a carpentry crew and I'd be quite satisfied with €22 per hour for each individual at the moment. Its reality.

Thanks johnr1, €55 to €60 per door sounds fair then. The frames are already in too.

By the way, how much would 100m of skirting cost to fix and what sort of time do you think it would take?

Skirting should cost you about €3.50 to €5.00 per metre. This would be pinned/nailed/stuck to a block or stud partition background. This is the norm for domestic situations apart from very high spec.
If its hardwood and you require it to be screwed and pelleted, that would cost more, - about € 6.00 to 7.00 per metre.
Screwing and pelleting is where the carpenter drills a hole big enough for the head of the screw to be hidden in the thickness of the wood with a pellet cut from the same wood to cover it.

    Hi John

If you were to take an estimate at how long it would take to fit 100m of red deal skirting how long do you thing it would take a good carpenter?

    Thanks

My carpenters are slow but their attention to detail is fantastic & they charged me €450 for 9 prehung doors.

I would have thought that a decent carpenter would be reluctant to hang doors in linings that he had not previously installed. That aside, £50 a door is about right. 2 good days work.
