Does anyone know what this means:

"Your means are in excess of social welfare limits ?"
I was refused supplementary welfare based on the above.

    WHat are means ?
    What are my means?
What are the social welfare limits ?

Im really lost TBH - Ive never applied for supplementary allow, I dont get rent supplement as they cut it off & ive been 6 months trying to deal with the new department.

    Thanks in advance

you applied for a SWA payment which is means tested. this involves the CWO examining your financial situation, they looked at your savings, your spouse/partners savings, at any property that you or your spouse/partner own apart from your own home , they looked at any other income that you and/or your spouse/partner might have eg is he/she working as an employee or self-employed? is he/she getting maintenance from anywhere?
any way in your case they decided that you already had enough to live on and didnt need any financial help from the state. there are strict amounts laid down about this. for example, if you have any more than €5000 savings then you do not need a SWA, you should use that money to fund yourself.

i thought it was 20000 euro savings before they start deducting your payment.

    no, for SWA its €5000
The value of investments, savings or property (but not the value of your own home) is calculated in as follows:
    CapitalWeekly means assessedFirst €5,000not taken into accountNext €10,000 €1 per €1,000Next €25,000 €2 per €1,000Balance€4 per €1,000
In the case of a married couple, civil partners or cohabitants, their income is added together when doing the means test.

Its not correct that you are not considered as needing help if you have more than 5,000.

You can have more than 5,000 and still get SWA, although it will be reduced. The scale they use is set out on the link above

The initial amount disregarded for most social welfare payments is 20,000 but for SWA it is 5,000. If you have 20,000 of savings and apply for SWA, you will have your payment reduced by 20 Euro per week (1 euro per thousand for the amount between 5-15k, and then 2 euro a week for the balance)
