Lads, just wondering have any of ye experienced a problem with an engine seizing in a 995? Our usual mechanic just had an operation so is out of action, as it's only used for scraping I don't want to spend to much money on it? Any one any ideas on what cost you would be looking at to repair it or would it be worth repairing?

I've a DB995. Similar problem to you in that mine is burning serious smoke. Mine isn't worth fixing as it already has oversize pistons from 20 year ago when the engine was first re-conditioned. The block is cracked and the gearbox selectors are worn. My mechanic who has years of experience told me it's not worth fixing. It's 1977, we use it nearly every day so it has serious work done. We minded, serviced it right, but there comes a time when it's just not worth repairing.

    How bad is yours?
What's the gearbox like? Was it burning smoke?
Any idea in what way it seized?

What part of the country are you in?

See she never burned any smoke really, she just cut out and wudn't start again, tractor has been well serviced to, never a bother starting or anything over the winter. The gear box seemed to be flying it, never a problem with it? I would not have much of a clue in what way it's seized, maybe the flyhwheel or pistons? In tipperary pakalasa:)

It may not be that big a problem. Could be something simple like the starter solenoid. Is the engine turning over when you try to start it?

Would you like me to PM you with 2 David Brown mechanics I know in east Clare? I know one guy deffo does call-outs.:D

It's hard to know how much these 'old' tractors are worth. A lot of them are just dodgy paint jobs and some are full refurbs, with fully reconditioned engines, shot blasting, and 2 pack painted. You'd really want to know what you're looking at.
If I'd show you a picture of mine, you'd think it was in good nick, but I know it aint.

it also could be dropped valve. had to repair valve recently. thought engine had seized at first:eek:.if its valve, its not an expensive job.what kind of hours has it clocked?

Hopefully its only a dropped valve, waiting for a mechanic to come look at it. Has about 4000 hrs done now, tractor owes me nothing, its 1977, was driving 100% but electrics were gone.

4k hours is nothing on these we had one that must have had well over 20k hours
when we sold and was still running perfect,

biggest problem with scraping only is that the engine never warms up enough or indeed it doesn't clean itself of emissions

those old DB.s loved full throttle :D:D

you will not get lot for it.what about 2nd hand engine. Tractor spares N.I. deal in good quality stuff literally off the shelf.if the rest of it is in good condition, could be an option
