    hey guys,

Just a curious question I'v always wanted to know,
Are there many persons of other cultural, religions and colour difference within the Irish Army? for example... asians...? And would there be many?

    Thanks in advance,
    -Vinny xXx

Not too sure but I have seen a few black people in the RDF.

As for religions or cultural background I'm not too sure as you do not have to disclose this.

As for PDF I assume it is the same but I couldn't be sure.

People of different ethnic origin in the DF are not necessarily immigrants. In answer to the op's question, yes people of different ethnic groups, and of different or of no religion do exist in the df.

    Corkonians? :)

Well there's a well known Iraqi in the army. Back in the eighties, long before it was common to have immigrants. There were always one or two. I remember a black guy, Irish though, in the 5th. He was called 'Chalky'. He wasn't too bothered by that, 'There's worse things they could call me' he said.

I also remember two black guys in the FCA. During a big parade both fainted in the hot sun. Rather ironic I thought at the time. But of course they probably had never been to Africa and were just like us when it came to hot weather.

Do you still have to swear on the bible ????

Yup, you still do the hand on the bible job. Although I presume accommodations will be made for those of other creeds.

Do the Vikings count as a separate ethnic group :D:D :pac:

yeah i'v seen many photos of people swearing oath to the bible! does everyone have to do this? As it would be abit silly if you were of different religion or no religion!

Plenty of people I know swore their oath on a large olf copy of the Collins English Dictionary.
If you don't wish to swear an oath, you may make an affirmation.

Yep, you can say "I declare" as opposed to swear. Doesn't always happen, but the provision is made for it in the defence act.

There was one black soldier in Custume Barracks in the late fifties, he was Irish and I think he was from Ballynacargy. He may have been a chef (or are they called cooks?).
