The title says it all really, but not the full story.

Myself and the better half are considering a cheap, simple, fun holiday. We're not very well off but we'd like the sun holiday break. Preferably a Spanish speaking location. Upon research, and keeping it cheap, I've found a great deal with Club 18-30, the UK firm of Thomas Cook, to Ibiza for 7 nights. When we stripped back the cost it works out at €280 each, add the €30 flights from Dublin to Gatwick, the departure airport, and we've got a great deal for €300.

I proceed, eagerly, to get the final cost to be asked "Are you a UK resident?". I selected "No", only to be told that they are "unable to accept bookings from customers based outside of the United Kingdom or in the Republic Of Ireland as we are not licensed to sell travel services in other countries".

Firstly, what is really stopping them? The "Fully Bonded" concept, or just territorial business reasons?

I was later prompted to check out the Irish branch, Direct Holidays/Sunworld/Panorama, but the same/equivalent deal is nearly, if not double, the price. Why the major change? Surely it's unfair if I want the same deal without the flights from Dublin. I'm more than willing to make my own way to Gatwick.

Basically I'm asking can I just go ahead and book as a "UK/NI resident" and never deny it, or will I get caught in a trap. If it's an insurance thing I won't be using theirs anyway, and if it's a business reason it's a whole different ballagame. I just feel it's a very odd situation. Flights to there alone from Dublin are €125-200 alone, so the deal I had was fantastic.

    Hi there,

we recently booked with Thomas Cook. Just give a UK address of a friend or family who live in the UK and they can send you the tickets.

    Enjoy!

Why do Irish residents behave online like Ireland is just another part of the UK when it suits and then complain about the Brits on After Hours? ;)

Thank you so very very much for your help and swift answer. I genuinely appreciate it.

However, God forbid, if "it" hits the fan somehow, or something goes wrong (flights, accommodation, whatever) can you be left with no leg to stand on? It's not even are you a UK resident, it's are you a UK national- and sure, they have your passport.

If it's as easy as that, as you say, I'm sold! :)
    But we still worry.

Again, thank you so much for your reply.

Oh, don't get me started on that. Those types wreck my head, and I'm most certainly not one of them.
They're the type that shout and roar such negative and distasteful comments regarding our neighbours one minute then go off and watch their football teams. Madness. But that's another day's talk and this isn't the venue for it.

And again, I'm far from the people you mention. :)
