What would have happened......?

While playing singles stroke last Monday I teed off on the Index 1 par 4. I hit a good drive down the middle and was left with about 185 yards to the centre of the green. Now, as me and my playing partner were approaching my ball I was looking down at the green and couldn't see any flag. It was raining at the time so visability wasn't great but eventually I saw the flag lying flat towards the front of the green. It was lying perpindicular to the fairway so any ball rolling onto the front of the green would have to hit it! My playing partner was well back so had layed up at this stage. Its a tough green to find(for me anyway), and I didn't feel like legging it down the fairway to put the flag back in, so I pulled out my 5 iron and of course nailed it! I was certain it was going to it the flag but luckily my ball took a big hop on the front edge and bounced over the flag to the back of the green. When I got to the green the flag was just lying alongside the hole so if it had of stopped my ball it would have finished a few feet from the hole.

Sorry for dragging on, but what would the ruling have been if the ball had happened to hit the flag?

By the way I 3 putted for bogey:mad:

    No penalty.
Although you knew it was not in the hole, it was not you that removed it or part of your grouping that removed it so there's no issue.

    Just thinking more on this...
There is no issue in your case but what if you missed the green and the not-replaced (blown down?) flag offered a nice little back stop for a chip towards the hole? hmmmmm....
Probably still not against a rule but seriously against the spirit?

Not sure on this either so my partner's ball was lying about 30 yards short of the green after he layed up so before he played I went ahead to the green and replaced the flag. And I'd say it must have been the wind that caused the flag to be where it was because I didn't see any other group out before us. Early morning, pi$$ing rain, not many out:D
