Handbrake light on?

Hi, I'm driving a '98 Mitsubishi Colt, and I've noticed that the handbrake light is on on the dash most of the time I'm driving (when the handbrake is not engaged, obviously!) It's only started happening the past month or so. It's on maybe 70% of the time that I'm driving.

Is this likely to be an actual problem with the handbrake, one that I need to get seen to, or is to likely to just be an electronics problem? The car seems to me to be running absolutely fine.

    Thanks!

This light also doubles as a pad wear indicator/low flud level on some cars.

Check your brake fluid level. Usually the handbrake light doubles as a low brake fluid level indicator. If your fluid is low then you should also check the wear on the brake pads and look for possible leaks.

Most likely brake fluid level low.

The light indicates a low fluid level in the reservoir. Usually caused by pads wearing down or the odd time by loss of fluid. Check fluid level then check front pads.
Not much point topping up then replacing pads as you'll have too much fluid.
    Get pads checked ASAP

Thanks all :) It passed the NCT not too long ago, so I was thinking it was probably just some electronic malfunction, but I'm guessing I should probably get a service ASAP. Appreciate the replies!
