Howdy ladies & gents, can someone in the know help me make the best decision as to which gearbox to purchase for my G&G M4 CQB.

I know very little about gearboxes and their internals.

My first question is I see a lot of upgrades for brands, say the marui m4a1, does that mean that it is only compatible with the marui gearboxes or that it will fit any m4/m16/Version 2 gearbox etc?

Next something basic I assume but whats the difference between a 7mm & 8mm gearbox (other than 1mm :pac:) what advantage do they afford if any?

I also like the idea of the ICS splitable gearboxes can you give me any advice on them and are ICS the only guys who make them? Are they compatible with the majority of the after market parts out there?

And generaly what are they best brands out there for gearboxes? Systema obviously is up there, but I cant afford that...

You could just buy upgrade internal parts for your gearbox, rather than an entire gearbox. It's easier on your wallet.

As far as I know, most gearboxes are clones of tokyo marui designs, so if something is marui compatible then it should work in other gearboxes also in most cases. Marui is kinda like the standard design.
The exceptions being gearboxes which have non-standard parts so they are not marui parts compatible.

As for 7mm,8mm,etc. that all stands for the size of the bearings for gearbox. The bearings keep the gears in place. Typically, the bigger the bearings, the stronger the gearbox is.

I can't comment on the ICS design.

This is a little of what I know, but a retailer or expert will be able to explain things much better. Experts such as; DeBurca,FK,Leftyflip, and the MINDER, to name a few off the top of my head.

Why do you want to replace the existing gearbox ?????
G&G gearboxes are some of the best around, so I would suggest that unless the gearbox shell is damaged/cracked that you keep it and repair/replace any damaged parts

Most G&G are 8mm unless it is from an older model in which case it will be 7mm and still worth repairing

Unless its a specific part, like say... an sr25 piston, or parts for specific guns (Mp5 and m4 use version 2 gearboxes, but different selector plates, air nozzle, and trigger) Then you should be grand. If its for a version two, or m4, it should be fine.
Next something basic I assume but whats the difference between a 7mm & 8mm gearbox (other than 1mm :pac:) what advantage do they afford if any?
Basically, this refers to the size of the bushing or bearing the gear axels sit in. The bigger the bearings are, the more stable they are, and less resistance they face turning. Smooth running.
I also like the idea of the ICS splitable gearboxes can you give me any advice on them and are ICS the only guys who make them? Are they compatible with the majority of the after market parts out there?
Ics are ok, but they only fit in ICS guns, Split design shouldnt fit into another aeg, and its really no advantage... its more a gimic for quick changing of springs, which other brands sorted out differently. ICS also are not compatable with most aftermarket parts (externals) they are off slightly on the dimensions.
And generaly what are they best brands out there for gearboxes? Systema obviously is up there, but I cant afford that...
    G&P - gears, motors, pistons
King Arms - nice piston heads and cylinder heads
Systema - good motors... tough gears, I don't rate them as hugely as others seem to.
HurricanE - great air nozzles, some of the best around
Madbull - from hop units, rubbers to barrels, awesome stuff.

And As ol' Deburca has said, no need to swap the box entirely, some parts for upping performance can help but the entire thing should be ok. G&G do good gearboxes.
    Hope this helps :)

Thanks guys for all the replys. I've no need to replace the entire gearbox, I've seen the error of my ways.

Thanks for the tips on the brands aswel, ive heard great things about the madbull barrels and hop ups, have the barrel and am ordering the hopup during the week.

I'll investigate the rest guys thanks again.
