    Hi there,

Apologies if this is the incorrect place to post this but I am new. I am looking to start singing lessons in the Dublin area and wondered if anyone might be able to recommend a school or individual?

I have already been to Waltons School of Music in their group beginners class and found it ok and I found Bel Canto school of music online. Bel Canto is v expensive and before I commit I was hoping to hear from a past pupil or has anyone heard good or bad things about it??

    Any feedback much appreciated.

Are you looking specifically in Dublin City? what style of singing are you hoping to do? What do you consider expensive? Are you seeking groups lessons or one to one? what age category would you fit? and finally what is your background in music/singing and what do you hope to achieve from your lessons?
This can help to direct you to the right teacher. Just because someone reports to teach singing you need to be sure what they offer suits what you want.

Did you not like waltons? I was thinking of doing a summer session there

Some of the teachers in Waltons are excellent, some are not. You're probably best going for someone you've been recommended.

    Hi,

Thanks for coming back to me. Are you a vocal coach yourself? I'm 35. Dublin city or North County would be best for me. I am looking for 121 singing lessons. The type of songs I like to sing or anything by Eva Cassidy, Sinead O'Connor, Adele, to name but a few. I'm looking to try and make a living out of singing but apart a few drunken karaoke nights and in front of friends and family have never really sung in public so I'm looking for lessons that would help me to improve my voice and my confidence to sing in public. Anyone you can recommend?

I did a group beginners class in Waltons and just felt that a 121 class would have been more beneficial. It was a good starting point though.

I am a teacher of singing in Skerries. www.skerriesmusicstudio.com

I teach mainly classical technique along with some musical theatre voice quality. I have dabled in some contemporary material but it is not my area of expertise. Whilst breathing and diction issues are similar the approach to popular singing is different.

Unfortunately anyone can set themselves up as a singing teacher and they are not regulated here in Ireland. It is worth searching for qualified teachers who are affiliated with AOTOS, TOSINI or the ISM.

I know of a teacher in Swords who is a contemporary artist herself who offers singing lessons if you pm me I will give you her number.

    Hope this helps.
    Hi,

Thanks so much for the info. Funnily enough I was looking at your site yesterday, I found it in a Google search and was going to give you a call :).

    What is pm?

    Thanks again!

I did a term of one2one lessons in Waltons, it was great! My teacher picked out all songs I really liked, as well as letting me sing what I wanted to, and researched the areas I wanted to sing in

I dont think group lessons are any use, unless you're already somewhat accomplished in singing, as theres lots of stopping/starting in private lessons, you learn MUCH faster and dont just get general coaching

ALL music lessons, even from fifth rate amateurs, tend to be expensive. The school isn't always the decider but the tutor. Sometimes even a really good tutor might be wrong for you. I accompanied many fine singers (people like Bernadette Greevy, etc) and some young singers who went on to better things (unfortunately many who fizzled out), sometimes really good singers had terrible teachers, more fun vice versa. Talking to singers can help, but everybody in music tends to be biased towards their own background.

I'd suggest an upfront conversation about what you want to do with your voice, what your vision is. There is no point in going to somebody who socialises in pure operatic technique if you want to sing who tunes!

I'm sorry if I'm asking on the wrong place, but does anyone know about free lessons?A choir maybe?

I am from Brazil and I've been in Ireland for a few months studying english.
In Brazil I was studying music and had just joined a choir, but everything I could find here in Dublin I can not afford...

Is there anything free or somewhere I could try a scolarship?

I am a soprano, a very ery shy one but I love music so much that I kind of getting depressed by not learning more...

    Thank you.

    Hi there,

The singing and vocals directory is here. It gives you a number of different options for finding a coach. Hopefully some kind posters will give their recommendations also though.;)
