CMax Turbo whine

Have an '06 Focus CMax 1.8 TDCI and sometimes between 2-3k rpm a bit of a whine can be heard coming from the turbo.
It's not very loud, but it's definitely not supposed to do that (been driving a few TDCI's and never heard that whine).
Will the turbo let go, or will it just go on? Is it a doable job to tackle at home? Has anyone had any experience with this sort of thing?
    Car has done 180k km.

Remove the air hose between the air filter and the turbo intake. Look at the tips of the impellers inside the turbo intake and see if they are bent. If so, chances are that they are striking the casing and its f**ked.

What's more likely is that the whine might be as a result of a leak somewhere in the intake system. Look at all of the intake pipework for leaks, especially if there are signs of oil stains....;)

Hi, sorry, only just saw your reply.
Will have a look at that over the weekend, holey pipe is of course always an option in any Focus variant :).

Should also add that the 1.8TDCi will sound different to the 1.6 which is more commonly found in the CMax. IMHO the 1.8 is a better engine too.

If there's an air leak between the turbo and the intake manifold then it'd be obvious. The car would be spluttering and dropping power when you have the shoe down driving it up the revs.

    Well, that's true.
Once had a leak between the intercooler and the air intake of the injection pump.
She smoked like a fothermucker and consumption went up to 36 mpg from the usual 50 mpg.
And I got an engine warning light.
None of that this time, only a low kind of whine, not at full throttle, but mostly as it spools up at low pressure and low revs. Consumption and smoke (i.e. none) same as normal.
