used to use one all the time but then discovered the joy of a U47-fet on the outside.

if i need any more sub than that then a ill use the brainworx boom plugin but it doesnt happen too often.

Yep on its own it sounds great but It is invaribly too much when everything else is in.

I use a Audio Technica 4033 on the outside of the kick for the low stuff, really works well. Think you heard last time I was in the Nutshed Paul.

Haven't tried the Brainworx thing but looks good, I was demoing the Waves CLA artist collection there recently and using the CLA Bass plugin on a kick and just using "sub" fader gave some nice results.

I occasionally use an Old NS10 driver and it sounds very impressive ... but rarely make the mix.
Make that "never" and I'm with you. Just make sure the drum is in tune and put the mic in the right place. Most microphones are good down to 20Hz and beyond, with a transient response orders of magnitude faster than an NS10 driver, which is pretty fast for a driver. Want less transients? Try, oh, I dunno, a compressor maybe?

There's an old VST/Pyramix plugin called 'Sculptura' - instead of having an extra sub you can 'breed' the lowest existing frequency band downwards - then also fiddle with the milliseconds forward and backwards to get it to sit well. VST/Directx only I think though.

I keep meaning to mess around with one but I have found a large diaphragm condenser a bit from the kick coupled with a low pass works very well.

My kick lacks decent lowend since its a cheapish kit but the LDC does give it a new edge.

Id also recommend the Evans EMAD skins if you want to get more low end grunt.
Coated EMAD batter is one sexy sounding skin.

if you want real low end , but one mic

use an old ludwig kick , 22 or 24 inch
the thin mahogany shell goes super low.

stick just an akg 112 or some such in a hole in the front and be creamed.

ive also heard good results from crappy big ribbon mics placed 2 or 3 feet in front of the kick

in fact the finest drum sounds are from ludwig old kicks ,
with modern birch toms up 6 , 8 10 12 inch , and modern maple toms 13 to 18 inch
